Tigers Begin CAA Tournament Today at Noon against the Cougars

OPENING TIP: The No. 8 Tiger women's basketball team opens the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament on Thursday, March 12 when it faces No. 9 College of Charleston. Opening tip of the first game of the tournament is set for 12 noon from the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. Towson Sports Network's Ben Rosenbaum and Ian Jett will have the call as the Tigers and Cougars are meeting for the second straight year in the first game.

SERIES HISTORY: The Tigers have seen plenty of success in their short series against the College of Charleston. Towson leads the series that began last year, 4-1. The Tigers have swept the regular season meetings in each of the last two years. College of Charleston claimed its win when the two squads met in the CAA quarterfinals last year. When the two squads last met, the Tigers claimed a 71-49 win in Towson on Feb. 1. In that game, Dominique Johnson led all players with 19 points while Breanna Bolden had 14 points for the Cougars.

IN THE CAA TOURNAMENT: This is the Tigers' 14th appearance in the CAA Tournament. It will be Towson's second time as the eighth seed for the CAA postseason action (5th-2, 6th-1, 7th-3, 8th-2, 9th-1, 10th-4, 11th-1). The last time the Tigers were the 8th seed was the 2008-09 season. They defeated Delaware 40-37, which is the Tigers' last CAA Tournament win, before falling to that year's eventual champion, Drexel 53-48.

WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY: Towson had four blocked shots in the regular season finale at William & Mary. Freshman center Daijha Thomas led the way with a season-high three blocks. The Tigers recorded more blocks than their opponents in 17 of the 30 games this season. Towson is 9-8 when it outblocks its opponents this season. Five Tigers have recorded at least 10 blocks this season (LaTorri Hines-Allen-33, Camille Alberson-19, Ciara Webb-14, Thomas-14, Markell Smith-11). Its the first time in program history that the Tigers have had five players with 10 or more blocks in the same season. Towson's 108 blocks this season are the most for the team since the 1979-80 team had 150 blocks in that season.

I'M HONORED: Redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen and freshman guard Breonn Hughey were honored as the CAA announced its all-conference teams on Wednesday. Hines-Allen earned first team accolades after finishing third in the league in scoring (16.9 ppg) and second in rebounding (9.6 rpg). She also led the league in double-doubles with 13. Hines-Allen is just the third player in program history to earn first-team All-CAA honors (Tanisha McTiller and Shanae Baker-Brice) after being a second team selection last year. Hughey finished the regular season tied for third in the league in assists per game (4.6 apg) and third in assist to turnover ration (1.9). She is the sixth player in program history to earn CAA All-Rookie honors.

MISS ASSIST: Freshman guard Breonn Hughey had two assists against William & Mary in the regular season finale. Hughey has 128 assists in 28 games for the Tigers this season.
She currently ranks seventh in single-season history for assists. She is just the ninth player in program history to record 120 or more assists in a single-season. She has five or more assists in 15 games this year. Hughey dished out a a season-high 10 helpers against George Mason in December. She then matched that mark with her performance against Drexel.
It is the first time since Betty Lou Bischof in 1985 that a Tiger has had 10 or more assists in two games in the same season. Hughey currently ranks tied tied for third in the CAA in assists per game (4.6) and third for assist to turnover ratio (1.9).

DOMO GOES DEEP: Junior guard Dominique Johnson knocked down three three-pointers against William & Mary. That gave her 67 three-pointers this season and 152 for her career.
Johnson is just the fifth player in program history to hit 60 or more three-pointers in a single-season. She currently ranks second for three-pointers in a single-season. Tara Rottet holds the school record for single-season threes with 73. Johnson's second three-pointer against Drexel on Feb. 15 moved her into second place on the career three-pointers list at Towson. The school record for career three-pointers is 190 set by Mia Chapman.

UP NEXT: The winner of Thursday's game will face No. 1 James Madison on Friday, March 13 at 12 noon.
