Tigers Have A Chance to Medal at U19 Women's Lacrosse World Championship

TOWSON, Md. – Both members of the Towson University women's lacrosse program in Scotland for the U19 Women's Lacrosse World Championship will have a chance to come home with a medal.

Rising sophomore Emily Gillingham and Team Canada won both of their games during bracket play and advanced to the gold medal game. Volunteer assistant coach Mike Molster and Team England split their games during bracket play and will be in the bronze medal game.

Gillingham and Canada opened bracket play by facing Scotland, who finished pool play with a 4-1 record. The Canadians wasted little time getting going as they scored a goal a little less than three minutes into the game and cruised to an 18-0 win. Gillingham had a goal and two ground balls in the win.

The win moved Gillingham and Canada into the semifinals against Australia, in a rematch of one of their pool play games. The first time these two met in pool play, they needed double overtime to decide a winner. Canada showed its offense was clicking by jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the first 20 minutes and claiming a 17-3 win. Gillingham had a draw control as Canada made history by advancing to its first ever gold medal game in tournament history.

Gillingham and Canada will face the defending champion, Team U.S.A. in the gold medal match on Saturday, August 1 at 10 a.m. EST. The U.S.A. defeated Canada on the opening day of the tournament.

Molster and England opened bracket play with a match against Wales. The two squads met on the first day of pool play with England claiming the 19-2 victory. This time the English opened up a 6-1 halftime lead and claimed a 12-4 victory. Molster works with goalkeeper Mimi Ruiz who made three saves in the game.

The win over Wales gave England a tough challenge in the semifinals as they faced the U.S.A. squad. The Americans defeated Wales 19-4 in pool play. The U.S.A. was able to get the better of the English squad in bracket play as well claiming a 20-4 win to advance to the gold medal match. Molster saw Ruiz make four saves in the contest.

Molster and England will face Australia with the bronze medal on the line on Saturday, August 1 at 7:15 a.m. EST. When England and Australia met in pool play, it took four overtimes before Australia claimed the 14-13 victory.
