Former Lacrosse Standout Smith Named to US Indoor Team

TOWSON, Md. – Following a three-day training camp, former Towson men's lacrosse standout Joe Smith has been named to the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Indoor Lacrosse Championship team for the United States.
 
A stalwart defenseman, Smith makes his second appearance as a member of the 2011 FIL World Indoor Championship team for the United States.
 
Under head coach Tony Resch, the US team will look to improve on its bronze finishes from the last three FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships.
 
The action for the 2015 edition of the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships begins on Sept. 18 and runs through Sept. 27. The Onondaga Nation and the city of Syracuse, New York will play host to the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships.
 
During his time as a close defenseman at Towson, Smith logged time in 50 games, coming up with 83 groundballs in the time. The Orchard Park, New York native helped the Tigers to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) titles in 2003 and 2004. During his freshman season, Smith and the Tigers claimed the America East Conference championship and reached the NCAA Tournament Semifinals.
 
Following graduation, Smith played professionally indoors in the National Lacrosse League (NLL), including his first three seasons (2008-10) for his hometown Buffalo Bandits. He was also a member of the Philadelphia Wings for all of 2011 and part of 2012 before being traded to the Rochester Knighthawks. During his time in the NLL, Smith played in 49 career games, grabbing 92 loose balls, tallying four assists and serving 32 penalty minutes.
 
Smith also had a long career in Major League Lacrosse (MLL), playing primarily for the Rochester Rattlers. Smith played in 74 MLL games, snagging 75 groundballs including a career high 17 in 2011 for the Rattlers.
