Series History: The Tigers renew one of their longest running rivalries when they travel to UMBC. It will be the 50th meeting all-time between the two schools separated by approximately 20 miles. The Tigers hold a commanding 36-14 lead in the series and have won five straight against the Retrievers. Last year when the two squads met in SECU Arena, the Tigers closed the game on an 11-4 run to secure the 61-51 victory.
Raven Bankston led all scorers with 23 points in that game while
Taylor McCarley led UMBC with 16 points.
I'm Honored: Towson senior guard
Raven Bankston was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week on Monday. Bankston averaged 23 points, 6.5 rebounds and five steals per game in a pair of Tiger victories. Bankston had 16 points, six rebounds and tied her career-high with seven steals in the win at Wagner. She followed that up by scoring 30 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals in the win over Cornell. Bankston is the first Tiger to receive CAA Player of the Week honors since
LaTorri Hines-Allen on March 3, 2014.
40 and Under: Towson held Wagner to just 40 points on Thursday. It was the lowest point total surrendered by the Tigers since they held Delaware to 37 points on March 12, 2009. It was the 10th time in program history and just the third time since elevating to Divsion I in the 1982-83 season that Towson has held an opponent to 40 or fewer total points in a game. The fewest total points Towson has surrended in a single game was 17 against UMBC in the 1976-77 season. The Tigers have held 28 opponents to under 60 points under the guidance of head coach
Niki Reid Geckeler.
Sharp Shooting Tigers: Towson has been extremely efficient and effective with its shots so far this season. The Tigers shot 49 percent from the field against Cornell and is now shooting 48.3 for the season. Towson ranks 17th in the nation as of Monday in that category. The Tigers have also been hot from behind the arc. Towson connected on five three-pointers against Cornell and finished the game shooting 41.7 percent. The Tigers are shooting 42.2 from deep this season and rank 17th nationally in that category as well.
I'll Take That: The Tigers recorded double digit steals for the third time this season, finishing with 11 in the win over Cornell. Six Tigers recorded at least one steal in the contest against the Big Red. That group was led by Raven and
Raine Bankston who had three steals each. Eleven of the 15 players on the Towson roster have recorded at least one steal so far this season. That group is led by
Raven Bankston, who has 14 swipes. Bankston, who tied her career-high with seven against Wagner, enters play this week ranked fifth in the nation for steals per game (4.67).
Strong Starts: Towson improved to 3-0 with the win over Cornell. It was the first time since 2012-13 that the Tigers started a year 3-0. A win over UMBC would give the Tigers a 4-0 mark to start the season. It would be the best start to a season since the 2008-09 team started the year with five straight victories. The best start in school history belongs to the 1979-80 squad, who opened the year with nine straight victories.
The Big 3-0: Senior guard
Raven Bankston continues to make the most of her senior after scoring 30 points in the win over Cornell. It was Bankston's second 30 plus point performance of the season. She is the first Tiger since
Tanisha McTiller in 2013 to have two 30 plus point performance in the same season. Bankston has now scored 30 plus points as a Tiger three times and has eight games with 30 or more points in her career (five came at Delaware State). Bankston has now scored in double figures 63 times in her career and 31 of those games have seen the Detroit, Michigan native score 20 or more points. As of Monday afternoon, Bankston ranked eighth in the nation in points per game.
Up Next: The Tigers return home for a three-game home stand following the UMBC game. The home stand kicks off with a 2 p.m. tilt against George Mason on Sunday, Nov. 27.
