Series History: The Tigers welcome an old rival to town Sunday as they face former Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival George Mason. The Patriots and Tigers faced each other at least once a year from 2001-02 until 2012-13 when they were both in the CAA. The Patriots lead the all-time series 18-11 following an 88-76 victory when the two squads met last year in Fairfax, Virginia.
Kristi Mokube led the Patriots with 22 points while
Raven Bankston had 30 for the Tigers. The two squads have split each of their last five meetings.
Strong Starts: Towson improved to 4-0 with the win over UMBC. It is the best start to a season since the 2008-09 team started the year with five straight victories. The best start in school history belongs to the 1979-80 squad, who opened the year with nine straight victories.
I'll Take That: The Tigers recorded double digit steals for the fourth time this season, finishing with a season-high 17 in the win over UMBC. It was the most steals by a Tiger squad in a single-game since the 2010-11 team had 17 against Richmond. Six Tigers recorded at least one steal in the contest against the Retrievers. That group was led by
Raine Bankston who had a career-high six swipes.
Jordyn Smith had a career-high four steals while
Raven Bankston also had four. Twelve of the 15 players on the Towson roster have recorded at least one steal so far this season. That group is led by
Raven Bankston, who has 18 swipes. Bankston, who tied her career-high with seven against Wagner, enters play this weekend ranked fourth in the nation for steals per game (4.50).
Let's Make It Raine: Towson got a huge lift from point guard
Raine Bankston in the win over UMBC. Bankston did a little bit of everything in the win. She posted a season-high 11 points to go along with a career-high nine assists, eight rebounds and six steals. Bankston's nine assists were the most by a Tiger in a single-game since
Breonn Hughey had 10 against Drexel on Feb. 15, 2015.
Defensive Dynamos: One of the keys to Towson getting off to a strong start this season has been a strong defensive presence. The Tigers have forced opponents into at least 17 turnovers in each of the first four games. The Tigers enter play this weekend ranked eighth in the nation in turnover margin (9.8) and ninth in turnovers forced (25.00). Towson scored 23 points off 28 UMBC turnovers on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who have scored at least 20 points off opponents turnovers this season enter play averaging 27 points per game off opponents turnovers.
Seeing Double: Towson had four players score in double figures in the win over UMBC. It was the first time since last year in the CAA Tournament against Drexel that the Tigers had four players in double figures. Senior
Raven Bankston and sophomore
Sianni Martin led the Tigers with 14 points each against the Retrievers. Redshirt junior
Jordyn Smith had a season-high 13 points while redshirt junior
Raine Bankston had a season-best 11 points.
Raven Bankston and Martin each scored in double figures for the fourth straight game. It was the 64th time that
Raven Bankston scored in double figures and the 19th for Martin.
Raine Bankston scored in double figures for the second straight game and 10th time in her career while Smith reached double figures for the third time in her career.
Up Next: Towson remains home to host Georgetown for its annual STEM day at noon.
