Series History: The Tigers get a chance to face the Rider Broncs for the third straight season. It will be 27th meeting all-time between Towson and Rider. The two squads met regularly in the 1980's when both schools were members of the East Coast Conference (ECC). Towson leads the series 15-9, however Rider snapped Towson's four game win streak in the series with a 78-72 win last year in the season opener for both teams.
Sianni Martin had 18 points and five assists in that game while Rider's
Robin Perkins had 18 points.
Seeing Double: Towson redshirt junior forward
Jordyn Smith recorded the Tigers' first double digit rebounding game of the season at Colgate. Smith pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds in the game. She added 10 points for her first career double-double.
Defensive Dynamos: Towson continues to take advantage of its opponents' turnovers. The Tigers scored 20 points off 22 Colgate turnovers on Thursday evening. It was the seventh time this season that Towson has scored 20 or more points off opponents' turnovers. Entering play on Friday, Towson led the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and ranked 22nd in the nation while forcing 22.11 turnovers per game.
Thank You Ian: The Tigers would like to offer their congratulations to color commentary
Ian Jett. A mass communications major, who is due to graduate next week, Jett has called the Towson women's basketball games for the last three plus years. Jett, who will be taking a job at the University of Tulsa in January, has been a huge help in promoting the women's basketball team among other sports for the Towson Sports Network.
Twenty-Twenty Vision: Towson senior guard
Raven Bankston scored a game-high 24 points on Thursday night at Colgate. Bankston scored 14 of her 24 points in the second half as she tried to help the Tigers come back in the contest. She has now scored 20 or more points three times this season and 32 times in her career.
I'll Take That: One of the keys to sucess for the Tigers has been their ability to get steals. Towson has recorded double digit steals in seven of its nine games this season. The Tigers had 12 steals against Colgate Thursday. Six Tigers recorded at least one steal against the Raiders. That group was led by senior
Raven Bankston, who had four swipes and redshirt junior
Raine Bankston, who added three. Towson had a season-high 17 steals against UMBC. The 17 swipes against the Retrievers were the most steals in a game since the 2010-11 squad had 17 against Richmond. The Tigers enter play Friday leading the CAA and ranked 17th in the nation in steals per game (12.3).
Raven Bankston was eighth in the nation for steals per game, while averaging 3.78 swipes.
We'll Take The Charity: The Tigers continue to find ways to get to the charity stripe and take advantage of those opportunities. Towson went 13-for-16 (81.3%) from the foul line on Thursday night at Colgate, including a solid 7-for-7 showing in the fourth quarter. It was the second time this season, Towson has shot 80 percent or better from the charity stripe. Thursday's performance raised the Tigers' free throw percentage to 69.9 (128-for-183) for the season. The Tigers rank fourth in the CAA in that cateory and have made the most free throws of any CAA team entering the weekend. Senior guard
Raven Bankston leads the at the charity stripe. She has connected on 35-of-38 chances (92.1%) and ranks second in the league for free throw percentage. Bankston was 6-for-7 from the foul line on Thursday night. She missed her first chance of the game, snapping a streak of 16 straight makes but rebounded and hit her next six chances.
Up Next: The Tigers take 18 days off for finals and the holidays following Sunday's action. The Tigers are back on the court on Dec. 29 when they host Norfolk State at 7 p.m.
