Ian Jett will have the call of the game starting at 5:15 p.m. Fans can also follow the Tigers on Twitter (
@Towson_WBB) for updates.
Supporting a Good Cause: The Tigers will do their part to support a good cause on Saturday. Any fan that brings a new or gently used unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots drive can receive an $8 ticket to the game.
Series History: The Tigers play their fourth of five straight games against teams from the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) area Saturday. It will be the 16th meeting all-time between the Tigers and Eagles, whose campuses are separated by just 10 miles. The Tigers hold an 11-4 advantage in the series. However, Coppin State snapped the Tigers' three-game win streak in the match-up with an 81-69 victory last year. In that game,
Raven Bankston had 15 points for the Tigers while
Keena Samuels had 14 points for Coppin State.
Defense Steps Up: Towson has found success with a strong defense that forces opponents into plenty of turnovers this season. Georgetown had 19 turnovers against the Tigers on Wednesday and Towson scored 21 points off of those turnovers. In all six games this season, the Tigers have scored at least 20 points off opponent turnovers. In four of those six games, the Tigers have forced their opponents into 20 or more turnovers. Towson entered play this weekend ranked 26th in the nation in turnover margin (7.17) and 14th in turnovers forced, averaging 23.17 per game.
I Know You: A pair of Tigers have a connection to their opponent as Towson takes on Coppin State. Towson assistant coach
Sidney Raikes is a Coppin State graduate who also served as an assistant coach for the Eagles for eight years. Raikes was a star on the basketball court for the Eagles. He led Coppin State to a four-year record of 80-39 overall and a 56-8 mark in MEAC play. Coppin State went 47-1 in MEAC action during Raikes' final three seasons. The Eagles captured three straight MEAC regular season titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1993 and the NIT in 1995. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, player development along with practice and game preparation. Last season, Raikes helped guide the Eagles to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship game while Janelle Lane earned Third Team All-MEACÂ accolades. Coppin State also won the MEAC Championship game during Raikes' first season when the Eagles went 20-12. In addition to Raikes, freshman
Nukiya Mayo will get a chance to face a former high school teammate in Coppin State's
Mia Crooms. The pair were teammates last year at Monsignor Scanlan High School in New York.
I'll Take That: One of the keys to sucess for the Tigers early on has been their ability to get steals. Towson has recorded double digit steals in five of its first six games this season. That includes a season-high 17 steals against UMBC. The 17 swipes against the Retrievers were the most steals in a game since the 2010-11 squad had 17 against Richmond. The Tigers enter play this week ranked 15th in the nation in steals per game (13.0). Senior guard
Raven Bankston is currently fourth in the nation for steals per game, while averaging 4.17 swipes.
Seeing Double: Towson has had at least two players score in double figures in each of its first six games this season. On Wednesday against Georgetown, senior guard
Raven Bankston had a game-high 18 points while senior forward
Brianna Bush had 10 points. Bankston has scored in double figures in each of the first six games this season and in seven straight games dating back to the end of last season. Bankston has scored in double figures in 66 games in her career. Bush has now scored in double digits in back-to-back contests. Bush has tallied double figures in four games in her career. Other Tigers to score in double figures this season include sophomore guard
Sianni Martin (five times), redshirt junior guard
Raine Bankston (twice) and redshirt junior forward
Jordyn Smith (twice).
Up Next: The Tigers hit the road for two games following Saturday's action. The road trip kicks off with a visit to No. 5 Maryland on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
