TOWSON, Md. – Kendyl Scott's pleasant personality lights up a softball field. The Towson University sophomore sparkplug is consistently smiling like she has a secret that she refuses to share.

It's more of a knowing grin that she's having fun and nothing will ever steal her joy. Scott loves the game. The sport is in her blood. More importantly, she has made several significant contributions to Towson's early season success in every facet of the game: offensively, defensively and on the bases.

"Defense has to be my favorite part of the game," Scott said. "I love doing everything that I can do to get that runner out and throwing somebody out from centerfield is the best feeling in the world as well as robbing somebody of a home run. It's all great."

Scott is one of many reasons why the Tigers are off to an 11-3 start to their season. Towson will look to add to that when it hosts the Tiger Clash on Saturday and Sunday at the Tiger Softball Complex. Towson will tangle with Bowling Green and Morgan State. The complete schedule is listed above.

For a team that played its first 13 games in South Carolina, being home for an extended homestand is pretty refreshing. Like many of the Tigers, Scott sparkled in their home debut by contributing two hits, including a solo homer as part of an 11-run fourth inning that was the difference in a 13-3 conquest of UMBC Tuesday afternoon. Scott also made a terrific diving catch in the fifth inning

"It was great being done with a game and heading into your locker room," Scott said with a laugh. "It's great to host a tournament and be home. Going to South Carolina was fun and it's good going on a big road trip with your team because you get to hang out with them all the time. Nothing beats being home."

Scott's sanctuary has been the softball field ever since she was a toddler. The affable Scott played basketball and volleyball in high school. However, the La Quinta (Calif.) native's first and only love was softball.

"I've been playing since I could stand," Scott said. "My dad had a glove on my left hand and a little ball in my right hand. I am passionate about softball and it's my life."

Last season, Scott was one of six Towson players with a batting average over .300. She hit .313, which was fourth on the team. She led Towson with 36 runs scored and finished with 52 hits, including 13 doubles, which was second on the team. The last time Scott saw Morgan State, she drove in a career-high five runs on April 22.

This season, Scott has picked up where she left off last year as six of her 12 hits have been for extra bases. She has slugged a pair of home runs and has four doubles. Causing havoc on the bases, Scott is also leads the Tigers with seven stolen bases.

"I am not trying to hit home runs," Scott said. "I am looking for gaps, trying to get on base, score my teammates and have my teammates score me. The home runs just come when they do, it's pretty cool."

Here's a quick glance at the teams Towson will face this weekend:

MORGAN STATE (2-9): Members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the Bears have victories over Akron and Bryant. Audrianna Alvarez leads the Bears with a .417 average. Morgan State has eight extra base hits this season. Other key performers for Morgan State early in the season have been Damali Young (.286) and Korynna Lara (.273). Kimberly Fontaine has hit Morgan State's only home run of the season.

BOWLING GREEN (5-8): The Falcons have been led by senior Marisa Shook, who is hitting a team-leading .417 on the season. Shook is ranked ninth in the nation in home runs (six), and she is 12th in the country in homers per game (0.46) and 14th in slugging percentage (1.028). Junior Haley Schrock is hitting .372, leading the Falcons in at-bats (43) and hits (16). She is tied for second on the team with three doubles, and has a .488 slugging percentage. Last weekend, BG was 2-3 at the South Alabama Invitational. The Falcons downed two-time defending Ivy League champion Dartmouth by scores of 5-1 and 6-1.

AGAINST THE FIELD: Towson lost the only previous meeting against Bowling Green, 10-0, at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa on March 17, 2006. Towson has never lost to Morgan State, winning all 14 meetings. The Tigers swept a doubleheader from Morgan State last year by scores of 4-3 and 11-3.

UP NEXT: Towson concludes its homestand by hosting the University of Virginia in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m.
