Towson Reaches The End Of The Road At Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Towson University men's basketball team concludes its three-game road trip at Elon Saturday night. It's been a tough week on the road for the Tigers, who have dropped Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) games to James Madison and the College of Charleston.

Despite being winless in three CAA outings, the Tigers enjoyed a spirited practice Friday afternoon inside of Elon's Alumni Gym. Confidence remains high and optimism bright for Towson, which believes happier times are just around the corner. The three teams that Towson have lost to in conference play are a combined 9-0. Two of the three (UNCW and Charleston) have RPI's in the top 60.

Towson Head Coach Pat Skerry on playing Elon
"The one thing we are focused on every day is effort. We've talked to the guys about how we prepare is how we'll perform. Our guys know what our record is in conference, but I think they are also aware that it's an everyday thing. Elon is a good team and they've played some tough games and a great non-conference schedule. They can shoot it. For us, it's about understanding the opponent and what the game plan is. Then again, it's about how we play. Do we execute and stick to the script. We all know what the goal is. We're just worried about playing the right way and if we do that, the results will take care of themselves. We have to turn the page quickly and figure out to get a road win against a good team like Elon."

A Look At Elon
Steven Santa Ana tied a Division I program record, draining nine three pointers en route to a team-high 29 points in an 88-85 loss to William & Mary Thursday night. The sophomore finished 9-of-11 from behind the arc. In addition to Santa Ana, four other Phoenix finished in double-figures. Dainan Swoope scored 15, while Tyler Seibring, Brian Dawkins and Luke Eddy added 11 points each. The Phoenix made 16 triples on the night, a season-high for Elon. Santa Ana scored 20+ points in a game for the fourth time in his career. Brian Dawkins scored in double figures for the 14th time this season with 11 against the Tribe, which is a team-best.

Last Meeting Against Elon
Towson defeated Elon, 67-56, on Feb. 20, 2016 at SECU Arena.  Three Towson players scored in double figures  led by junior John Davis' 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Towson limited Elon to 31 percent shooting (18-for-58). The Tigers held Elon to a season-low point total.

Last Time Out
Arnaud William Adala Moto led Towson with 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting in a 62-57 loss to the College of Charleston Thursday night. Eddie Keith II grabbed a career high nine rebounds and finished with seven points. Brian Starr finished with nine points and six rebounds. Trailing 56-49 with 2:47 remaining, Towson used an 8-2 run to put itself in position for a victory. Keith scored on a tip-in with 23 seconds left to pull Towson to within, 58-57.  The Tigers forced another turnover to get the ball back but a potential game-winning shot fell short.

Sensational Second Halves
The Tigers made 19 of 29 shots (65.5 percent) in the second half against UMBC. It was their highest shooting second half of the season. Towson made 63 percent of its shots (17-for-27) against Morgan State. Towson has shot at least 50 percent in the second half six times this season.

Davis Thriving
John Davis posted consecutive double-doubles against Stony Brook (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Robert Morris (18, 10) for the first time since Jan. 22-24, 2015. He leads the CAA with five double-doubles. With 619 career rebounds, Davis passed Steffan Bunsavage and into 10th place all-time in program history.  He became the 10th player in program history with at least 600 rebounds. He needs 11 rebounds to pass Junior Hairston and into ninth place on Towson's all-time rebounding list. Davis has been part of 65 victories for the Tigers during his career. If the Tigers win 18 games this season, Davis will be Towson's winningest player in Division I history. Currently the mark is 75 held by Timajh Parker-Rivera.

Sticky-Fingered Morman
Towson guard Deshaun Morman leads the CAA in steals, averaging 1.7 per game. He has registered at least three steals four times this season. Morman has also collected multiple steals in six consecutive games. He has a career-best four steals against Stony Brook. He is averaging 10.3 points per game.

Baby, I Am A Starr
Towson guard Brian Starr has started Towson's last four games and has made a significant impact. He is averaging 8.3 points per game since becoming a regular in the starting lineup. He scored a career best 14 points against Iona in the South Point Holiday Classic on Dec. 22. Starr also scored nine points against the College of Charleston. Starr has also grabbed at least five rebounds in two of those starts. He had five against Iona and a career best six against the College of Charleston.
