Tigers Host George Washington Thursday in Home Opener

Pack the House: The Towson University women's basketball team is hoping to pack the house as it makes its 2017-18 home debut on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will welcome George Washington to SECU Arena as head coach Diane Richardson makes her home debut on the Tiger bench. The game has free admission so fans are encouraged to come out and see the Tigers in person. Links to live stats and the video feed can be found on the schedule page of TowsonTigers.com. Towson Sports Network's Ben Rosenbaum will be on the air starting at 6:45 p.m. to call the action. Fans can also follow the Tigers on Twitter (@Towson_WBB) for updates.

Series History: For the first time since the 2014-15 season, the Tigers will have a chance to resume their series against George Washington. The Colonials lead the match-up 8-2, after claiming a 82-48 win in SECU Arena on December 31, 2014. Kelli Prange had 10 points for the Colonials while Daijha Thomas tallied five points in 18 minutes off the bench for the Tigers. This is the second straight game for the Tigers against a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Towson will face three A-10 members this season (UMass, George Washington and Saint Joseph's).

It's Good to be Home: Towson kicks off its 2017-18 home slate when it hosts George Washington. The Tigers will be looking for back-to-back wins in their home openers for the first time since the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. Last year, the Tigers defeated UMass Lowell, 90-56 in their home opener.

Mayo Makes the Most of Her Start: Sophomore Nukiya Mayo made just the third start of her career when the Tigers faced UMass this past Sunday. The Bronx, New York native made the most of her chance pouring in a career-high 19 points in the game. It was the fourth double-digit scoring performance of her career. She also added six rebounds, which tied her career-high and a block against the Minutewomen.

Welcome to the Block Party: The Towson defense put up a strong showing in the season opener at UMass. The Tigers blocked seven shots against the Minutewomen. Four Tigers recorded at least one block in the game and that group was led by seniors Mary Cuevas and Daijha Thomas who had three and two blocks, respectively. It was the most blocks in a game by a Tiger squad since they had seven against the College of Charleston during the 2015-16 season.

Don't I Know You ? Towson's opponent for its home opener will have some familiarity for Tiger head coach Diane Richardson and assistant coach Zach Kancher. Richardson spent four years as an assistant coach at George Washington (2012-16). She helped the Colonials win the Atlantic 10 Championship twice. George Washington made two NCAA Tournament appearances and WNIT Tournament appearance during her time in Washington, D.C. Kancher served as an assistant with Richardson during the 2015-16 season at George Washington.

Clearing the Glass: Towson won the rebounding battle in the opener at UMass, 40-34. Nine of the 12 Tigers who appeared in the game grabbed at least one rebound. That group was led by senior Mary Cuevas, who collected a game-high 10 rebounds. Last year the Tigers grabbed 40 or more rebounds in a game eight times. Towson went 5-3 in those contests.

We'll Take the Charity: Towson took advantage of it's trips to the foul line in the season opener against UMass. The Tigers went 10-for-11 from the charity stripe in that game, which equalled a 90.9 free throw percentage. Four Tigers made two or more foul shots in that game. That group was led by sophomore Nukiya Mayo and junior Danielle Durjan, who each connected on three shots. It was the first time the Tigers shot 90% or better from the foul line in a game since they were 13-for-14 (92.9%) against Delaware during the 1999-2000 season. Towson was tied for the fourth best free throw percentage in the nation after the opening weekend of play.

Up Next: Towson travels to the University of Pittsburgh for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday, Nov. 19. The Tigers return to SECU Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 21 to host UMBC at 11 a.m. on STEM Day.
