Tigers Set to Battle Pitt on Sunday Afternoon

On the road again: Playing its second game in four days, the Towson University women's basketball team hits the road to visit the University of Pittsburgh on Sunday, Nov. 19. Opening tip from the Petersen Events Center on Pitt's campus is set for 2 p.m. Links to live stats and the video feed can be found on the schedule page of TowsonTigers.com. Fans can also follow the Tigers on Twitter (@Towson_WBB) for in-game updates.

Series History: For the first time since the 2005-06 season the Tigers will get a chance to resume their series with the Pittsburgh Panthers. Pitt has won each of the first four meetings between the two schools. Three of the first four games came during the late 1970's. However the last came during the 2005-06 as Pitt defeated Towson 69-50 in it's Thanksgiving Tournament. The Tigers will be looking for just their second ever win against a Division I team from the city of Pittsburgh (1-5 vs. Duquesne, 0-4 Pittsburgh).

Defense Clamps Down: Towson kicked its defense into high gear in the second quarter on Thursday night versus George Washington. The Tigers held the Colonials to just four points during that 10-minute stretch. It was the fewest points allowed by the Tigers since they gave up five in the third quarter at UMBC last year. Since the start of last season, the Tigers have held an opponent to single-digits in a quarter in 10 times. The best of those performances came at Wagner last year when the Tigers held the Seahawks to single-digits in three of the four quarters.

Thank You Fans: The Tigers got great support from the fans in their home opener against George Washington. The attendance on Thursday night was 1,213 in SECU Arena. It was the first time the Tigers had over 1,000 fans for a home game since the STEM game last year. It was the largest attendance for a women's game that wasn't a doubleheader with the men's team or a STEM Day game since the Tigers had 1,481 for their game against Maryland during the 2012-13 season.

Welcome to the Block Party: The Towson defense put up a strong showing inside against George Washington. Senior Mary Cuevas tallied a pair of blocked shots to lead the Tigers, who had four on the night. The Tigers blocked four or more shots in a game just nine times last year but already have back-to-back games with four or more blocks this season. Cuevas leads the Tigers on the year with five blocked shots. Sophomore Nukiya Mayo and senior Daijha Thomas each have two rejections to their credit so far this season.

Balanced Attack: One of the things the Tigers have managed to do during the first two games of the season is showcase a balanced attack. In both games the Tigers have had eight different players score at least two points. In each of those games half of the Towson scorers have tallied at least six points. Sophomore Nukiya Mayo led the Tigers with 19 points in the opener while senior Mary Cuevas tallied a team-high 13 points against George Washington.

Clearing the Glass: Towson won the rebounding battle for the second straight game, grabbing 37 boards to George Washington's 36. Nine players pulled down at least one rebound against the Colonials. Sophomore Nukiya Mayo led the way with a career-high eight rebounds in that contest. Last year the Tigers won the rebounding battle just 12 times. .

I'll Take That: Towson recorded a season-high eight steals in Thursday's game against George Washington. Five different Tigers posted at least one steal in the game. That group was led by redshirt senior Raine Bankston, who had three. For Bankston it was her 16th career game with three or more steals.

Up Next: The Tigers make a quick turnaround as they will host UMBC on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. It will be the Tigers' annual STEM game and they will be joined by over 4,000 local elementary and middle school students. The young students will have a chance to take part in science, technology, education and mathematics events before the game.
