TOWSON, Md. – Towson University women's basketball head coach Diane Richardson announced a talented and diverse group of players have signed National Letters of Intent (NLIs) and will join the Tigers for the 2018-19 campaign.
Richardson's first incoming class at Towson includes guards Jennifer Davis, Ryan Holder, Cydney Rivera and Shavonne Smith along with stretch forward Aislynn Flinn and post Janeen Camp.
Davis is a 5-5 point guard from Richmond, Virginia where she attends TPLS Christian Academy. A first team all-conference selection, she enters her senior year with 1,556 career points and 861 career assists. Davis scored a career-high 32 points in a contest and also handed out a career-best 13 assists in a game. She once hit 10 three-pointers for TPLS Christian Academy. Davis has served as one of the team captains and is an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society.
"Jennifer is a very savvy point guard with great court vision and fundamental skills," said Richardson. "She is great at getting the ball to her teammates in every situation."
Holder is a 5-11 guard from Baltimore, Maryland, who will join the Tigers as a transfer after spending her sophomore year at Harford Community College. She earned the start in the Fighting Owls' season opener and responded with eight points, two rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Holder spent her freshman year at UMass where she appeared in 30 games and made 25 starts for the Minutemen. She averaged 9.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game during her rookie campaign. Holder played her high school basketball at Roland Park Country Day School where she was a two-time IAAM finalist and was a three-star recruit by ESPN.com. Holder comes from an athletic family. One of her older brothers, Emmanuel, played football at Towson and was an All-American.
"Ryan is an athletic guard that can create offense," said Richardson. "She is a lock down defender and ranked in the top 10 in steals in the Atlantic 10 Conference as a freshman."
Rivera is a 5-8 combo guard who hails from Cypress, Texas and attends Lutheran North High School. She led Lutheran to a state championship last year and to the final four twice. Rivera is a two time district MVP who was named the 4A Texas Player of the Year. She also brings international playing experience to Towson having competed as a member of the U19 Puerto Rican National Team.
"Cyd can score and distribute the ball with poise and confidence," said Richardson. "She brings a high level of experience from her time playing on the Puerto Rican National Team."
A 5-9 guard, Smith joins the Tigers from Mount Holly, New Jersey where she is a key contributor at Pemberton Township High School. Last year as a junior she averaged 16 points per game for the Hornets. Smith, who goes by the nickname "Scoop," contributed 432 points, 263 rebounds and 46 blocks during her junior year. She was a first team all-conference and second team all-county selection who also brought home the South Jersey All-Group 3 award last year.
"Scoop is a very athletic guard with a high basketball IQ," remarked Richardson. "She is very versatile and can play multiple positions. We look forward to her bringing an up tempo style of play."
Flynn is a 6-3 stretch-four from Point Lookout, New York. She currently attends preparatory school at Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Connecticut, where she is coached by Derek Marchione. She graduated high school in 2017 from Long Island Lutheran High School where she led her squad to a pair of state championships.
"Aislynn is a very skilled post player with a deep range on the perimeter," said Richardson. "She will bring a versatile outside/inside game, and her skills will allow us to stretch the defense."
Camp is a 6-5 post player from Portsmouth, Virginia where she was a teammate of fellow incoming Tiger Jennifer Davis at TPLS Academy. She averaged 15.1 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 2.3 steals per game for TPLS. Camp was ranked as the number two post player in the DMV by NextSportsPhenom and among the top 25 nationally at her position by ASGR. She earned NISAA First Team All-Conference accolades.
"Janeen is a great shot blocker that uses her body well in the paint," remarked Richardson. "She runs the floor well and can bury her defender. She brings the ability to be a great rim protector for us."
Richardson and the Tigers open the 2017-18 season on Sunday, November 12 when they travel to UMass for a 2 p.m. game.
