TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team got a strong start from
Matt Allen, and the Tigers scored a run in six of the eight innings in defeating George Washington, 8-4, Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
How It Happened
- Allen (3-1) got off to a strong start by striking out the first two hitters he faced. Allen would retire the first four hitters he faced before allowing a single.
- Allen would finish the game giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits and four strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
- The Tigers (15-20) gave Allen some offense in the first inning as Richie Palacios and Billy Lennox each walked on four pitches. Richard Miller drove in both runners with a triple out near the 424 sign in right center.
- Miller would make it a 3-0 lead after scoring on a wild pitch.
- Towson added a run in the second inning after Colin Dyer walked and stole second. Mark Grunberg followed with a base hit through the right side to score Dyer from second.
- GW (19-19) got on the board in the third on a two-out single off the bat of Andrew Selby.
- The Tigers got the run right back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Trey Martinez. The bunt scored Gimblet from third after he singled to start the inning and went to third on an A.J. Gallo single through the right side.
- Bobby Camblell hit a two-run home in the sixth to pull the Colonials within 5-3.
- Towson would score single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings on a RBI double from Grunberg, a RBI single from Gallo and a pair of wild pitches to score Dyer after a one-out double.
- Brandyn Vogtsberger (1) earned his first career save after giving up just one run on one hit in a career-high three innings of work.
- Shane Sweeney (2-4) took the loss after surrendering three runs on one hit and two walks in just one-third of an inning.
- Grunberg led the offense with three hits and two RBIs. Gimblet and Gallo each added two hits.
- The victory was the first for the Tigers over Colonials since a 9-5 victory at Schuerholz Park on March 12, 2013.
