TOWSON, Md. – Towson University senior second baseman Caroline Reid isn't playing softball by accident.

"My sister Lindsey played softball," Reid said. "I always wanted to do what she did. She made me start loving softball. That was the best time of my life. I wish she went to Towson so we could play together more."

Reid's softball career is coming to an end. It's been a memorable ride for her. She played travel ball with her sister for three years and they were high school teammates for two years. While they didn't play at the same college, Reid did play against her sister in college two years ago. The Tigers won that game.

"She tried to tag me at second and missed," Reid said. "We've never been competitive against each other so I don't bring that game up to her. She always wanted me to do well and I always wanted her to do well."

Reid's best move occurred when she decided to transfer to Towson from Appalachian State after her freshman year. Reid joined another family and has been a key contributor to the Tigers' success over the last three years.

The Tigers (20-24 overall, 3-10 Colonial Athletic Association) are in the unfamiliar position of fighting for their playoff lives as they are in seventh place heading into this weekend's road series against UNCW (29-12-1, 8-6). The Tigers and Seahawks will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday with a single game at the same time.

Elsewhere in the CAA this weekend Delaware visits Elon, Hofstra travels to the College of Charleston and James Madison hosts Drexel.

"We need to remind ourselves that we still have a shot at (qualifying for the CAA tournament)," Reid said. "We have a lot of fight left and each of us on this team is competitive. We have so much talent and pride so we believe that we can go a lot further."

Reid will do everything she can to help the Tigers this weekend. Competing with relentless passion, Reid plays the position well and is a smooth fielder. Reid started her softball career by playing shortstop before finding a home at second. Reid and shortstop Brook Miko are perfect infield combination.

"I like playing second base because I see the ball off the bat and have a better angle," Reid said. "Playing in the middle of the infield, you are in charge of communication. You have to be aware of everything that's going on.  It's pretty fun. I've gotten a lot more action at second base this year. You always have to be 100 percent ready for the ball because we have groundball pitchers."

While Reid's dependable defense has helped eased the tension of Towson's pitching staff, her personal stress level was decreased in December when she was accepted into Chatham University in Pittsburgh for graduate school. Starting this fall, Reid will begin work towards her master's degree in occupational therapy.

Reid's goal is to work in a nursing home and assist with the geriatric population. She has volunteered and worked in nursing homes during the offseason.

"They make me super happy," Reid said. "They are always fun to be around and they need the most help. My grandfather got sick and that's why I started wanting to work with the geriatric population. They get so much joy out of the smallest things and that makes me feel better."

In addition to bringing joy to others, Reid also enjoys taking her dog for walks, hiking and being outside.

Reid admitted that she's thought about next weekend's home finale against the College of Charleston. It will be a bittersweet moment for Reid, who has enjoyed her time as a Tiger. During her career, she has been part of 92 victories while helping the Tigers advance to the CAA championship game last season.

"I have become so close with this team and I can't imagine playing with a different group of girls," Reid said. "My senior year has gone by so fast that I can barely remember this past fall and it went by so fast. It's definitely going to be hard and sad. I am more sad to be leaving the girls and friends here because they've really impacted me."

A LOOK AT UNCW: The Seahawks have lost five consecutive CAA games to Hofstra and James Madison over the last two weeks. Senior Nella Chamblee registered two hits, including a home run during last Sunday's losses to James Madison. Chamblee extended her hitting streak to four straight games … She has also reached base safely in nine consecutive contests. UNCW is the top fielding team in the CAA and second in the conference with a 2.25 earned run average. The Seahawks have four pitchers ranked among the CAA's top in ERA: Laurel Koontz (third, 1.08), Peyton Jordan (fifth, 1.58), Lacey Fox (seventh, 2.33), and Sarah Davis (10th, 2.70).

TICKETS: UNCW charges for its softball games. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $2 for kids (ages 3-15).

UP NEXT: Towson finishes the regular season next Friday when it hosts the College of Charleston in a three-game series. The Tigers and Cougars will play a doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Friday and wrap-up the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
