TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team's 2017 season will conclude this weekend when it hosts the College of Charleston in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) series at the Tiger Softball Stadium. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday afternoon starting at 12 p.m. and finish the series with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Tigers (21-26 overall, 4-12 CAA) will miss the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. Meanwhile, the visiting Cougars (31-19, 11-7) enter this weekend with a five-game winning streak.
Towson will honor its four seniors (
Holiday Cahill,
Caroline Reid,
Jessica South, and Carly DeLauder) prior to Saturday's game. They helped Towson win 122 games, including 30 or more in consecutive seasons, and participate in two CAA championship games. The Tigers won 37 games and finished 10th nationally in home runs per game following last season.
Things have been different this season for Towson, which will look to win its first CAA series of the season.
LAST MEETING AGAINST CHARLESTON: The Tigers lost two out of three regular season games to the Cougars last season. However, Towson beat Charleston twice in the CAA tournament, including 12-1 in an elimination game that was highlighted by an eight-run second inning and five RBI's from
Daria Edwards.
WHO'S HOT FOR TOWSON: Freshman
Madison Wilson has a seven-game hitting streak. She is 11-for-23 (.478) during her hitting, which also includes four multi-hit games. Overall, Wilson is hitting .433 in Towson's last 10 games.
HOME NOT SO SWEET: Towson is looking for its first conference home victory of the season. Towson lost three games to James Madison and two to Drexel at the Tiger Softball Stadium.
RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY: The forecast is calling for heavy rain on Friday and Saturday. Rain, snow, cold and ice have been Towson's enemies this season. The Tigers have had 11 home games postponed by weather, including three consecutive contests.
A LOOK AT CHARLESTON: Charleston swept Hofstra last weekend. The Cougars have seven hitters with averages above .300: Taylor DuPree (.396), Taylor Belfiore (.349), Yari Felix (.323), Madi Brown (.316), Jordin Jones (.305), and Lexee Emanuel (.302), and Katie Padilla (.301). DuPree has 67 hits and 41 runs scored. Belfiore and Jones lead the Cougars with seven home runs. Charleston is hitting .303 as a team. CofC is second overall in the CAA and has made its move on the strength of eight wins in its last nine CAA games and victories in 11 of its past 13 overall.
