TOWSON, Md. – The longest road trip of the nonconference season is on tap this weekend for the Towson University women's soccer team. The Tigers head south for tilts at Longwood University on Aug. 24 and East Carolina University on Aug. 27.
Thursday's game is slated for a 7 p.m. start at the Longwood Athletic Complex, while Sunday's match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Pirates' Johnson Stadium.
The Coverage
Both matches this week will feature live streaming video and live stats, in addition to updates on the team's official Twitter account, @Towson_WSoc. Links to follow the action can be found on TowsonTigers.com.
The Series: Longwood (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Big South)
Thursday's game will be just the second-ever meeting between the Tigers and the Lancers and the first since Sept. 7, 2007. Towson leads the all-time series with Longwood at 1-0-0 thanks to a 5-0 win over the Lancers at the Navy Invitational. Thursday's contest will be the Tigers' first meeting with Longwood in a true road game.
The Series: East Carolina (1-0-0, 0-0-0 American)
Likewise, Sunday's match will be just the second-ever meeting between Towson and East Carolina. After waiting out storms in the Greater Baltimore area, the Pirates nabbed a 2-1 win in Towson last season. Then rookie
Elizabeth Coletti scored the first goal of her career in the 65
th minute to tie the match. This weekend's matchup will be the first-ever meeting between the Tigers and the Pirates in Greenville, North Carolina.
The Pirates will not play until Friday evening when they head to in-state foe Davidson College for a 7 p.m. match.
With a Win Thursday…
- Towson would run its nonconference unbeaten streak to three games, dating back to a 2-0 win over George Washington on Sept. 18, 2016.
- The Tigers would get their first road win since Sept. 25, 2016 after besting William & Mary.
- Towson would get its first nonconference road win since edging Temple, which Towson meets later this season, 1-0 on Sept. 4, 2016.
- The Tigers would improve to 2-0-0 over the Lancers in series history.
- Towson would improve to 2-0-0 in its last two games in the Commonwealth of Virginia, including the win over William & Mary last season.
- The Tigers would even their all-time record against teams currently in the Big South Conference at 11-11-2. Towson's last win over a Big South school came on Sept. 1, 2014 with a 3-0 at home over Radford.
With a Win Sunday…
- The Tigers would even the all-time series with East Carolina at 1-1-0.
- Towson would get its first win in the state of North Carolina since Oct. 25, 2015 with a 1-0 win at CAA foe Elon.
- The Tigers would improve to 4-2-0 against institutions currently aligned with the American Athletic Conference. Towson's last win over a school from the American came last season with the 1-0 win at Temple (Sept. 4, 2016).
Battle of Baltimore
After playing UMBC to a 1-1 draw last Friday and topping Loyola 1-0 on Sunday, the Tigers and UMBC shared first place in this year's Battle of Baltimore. In addition to drawing with Towson, UMBC edged Mount St. Mary's 1-0 on Sunday. Towson and UMBC went 1-0-1 during the weekend while Mount St. Mary's went 1-1-0 thanks to a 3-1 win over Loyola, which finished 0-2-0 in the Battle.
Four Tigers were named to the Battle of Baltimore All-Tournament Team:
Lexy Andrews,
McKenzie McCaull,
Sarah Quick and
Alexis Toles.
Road Warriors
After a quick one-game home stand, the Tigers hit the road for four of their next five contests. A three-game road journey begins this weekend at Longwood (Aug. 24) and then East Carolina (Aug. 27) before a quick trip the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Aug. 31 against Lehigh. Towson returns home to face Saint Joseph's on Sept. 3 before heading to the Nation's Capital for a clash with George Washington (Sept. 7).
Longest Nonconference Road Trip
This weekend's trek down south takes Towson on its longest nonconference road trip of the season. The Tigers will travel roughly 230 miles on Wednesday from the Towson Center to Longwood University. After Thursday's game, the Tigers will head to East Carolina, an additional 176 miles. Sunday will see the Tigers return to Towson after a 335 mile trip from Greenville, North Carolina. The Tigers will cover roughly 750 miles this weekend.
We Have That in Common(wealth)
Thursday's game marks the first game the Tigers will play in one of the country's four Commonwealths when they head to Farmville, Virginia. Next week the Tigers will play in their second Commonwealth for a Thursday, Aug. 31 match in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The final Commonwealth will be an Oct. 19 game at Northeastern in Boston, Massachusetts. The only Commonwealth the Tigers will not play in this season is Kentucky.
Opposite Sides of the Country
Two freshmen will join the Tigers in 2017 with
Afton Kalkoske and
Hannah Warner matriculating to Towson this fall. Despite sharing a class, the pair have an entire country between their hometowns. Warner hails from nearby Bel Air, Maryland, roughly 20 miles from campus. Kalkoske arrived in the Greater Baltimore area from La Quinta, California, some 2,600 miles from Towson University.
A Helping Foot in Each Goal
To date, junior forward
McKenzie McCaull has had a foot in each Towson goal this season. In the season opener at UMBC, McCaull finished a loose ball in the penalty area to put the Tigers up early on the host Retrievers. On Sunday in the home opener, McCaull chipped in a cross to classmate and fellow forward
Evelyn Neidert for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Don't Blink, You Might Miss Something
Towson has been quick out of the gates in 2017, scoring its two goals in a combined 4:25.
McKenzie McCaull scored the first goal of the season at 3:17 at UMBC, followed by
Evelyn Neidert's strike in just 78 seconds on Sunday against Loyola. The Neidert goal was the fastest Tiger goal to start a game since Katie Ponce buried a shot against Radford in just 49 seconds on Sept. 1, 2014.
Free Clinic: Monday, Oct. 9
Looking for something to do with the kids on Monday, Oct. 9 while schools are out? Fear not! Towson women's soccer has the solution.
On Columbus Day, the Tigers will host a free youth clinic for kids from kindergarten to eighth grade. The clinic will be held at the Tiger Soccer Complex from 9 a.m. until noon.
How much is the youth clinic? It's FREE to those who attend a home game between Sunday, Aug. 20 and Oct. 5. That's eight chances to register with Towson's fan development at all the Tigers' home games.
Can't make it to a game but still want to attend? The Tigers are asking a $10 donation to the program in lieu of attendance at any game this season.
