Tigers Sweep Every Event in Home Opener With Temple, W&M

TOWSON, Md. – Highlighted by four career-highs on the balance beam, the Towson University women's gymnastics team won all five events en route to wins over Temple and William & Mary on Sunday in its home opener at SECU Arena.

The Tigers totaled 194.725 points to finish first while Temple was second with 191.575 and William & Mary finished third with 190.475.

Senior Tyra McKellar posted three event wins in the vault, bars and all-around while junior Mary Elle Arduino captured first in the beam and senior Lauren Cahalan finished first on floor.
 
How it Happened
  • Towson began the meet on vault, totaling a season-high 48.125 points, an improvement over last week's 47.950, highlighted by freshman Kyla Gamble who posted a career-high 9.775. McKellar had a 9.800, just shy of her career-high of 9.825.
  • The Tigers moved to bars for the second rotation where Gamble and McKellar again led the way. Gamble posted a career-best 9.725 to finish fourth while McKellar had a 9.825 to win the event. Senior Katie McGrady also had a career-high, placing second with a 9.750.
  • Towson posted the top three scores on beam in the third rotation, totaling five scores of at least 9.700 en route to a 48.825 team score. Arduino just missed tying her career high of 9.925 with a meet-high 9.900 to finish first. Senior Gabriella Yarussi was second with a 9.775 while Cahalan came in third with a 9.750.
  • The Tigers earned the top four scores on floor in the fourth and final rotation with Cahalan leading all gymnasts with a career-high 9.875. She was one of five Tigers with at least a 9.800. McGrady had a career-best 9.850 to finish second while McKellar and junior Cortni Baker each placed third with a 9.825. Sophomore Melissa Temkov came in seventh with a career-high 9.800.
  • McKellar also won the all-around competition with a 39.150, just shy of her career-high 39.300. Arduino was second, setting a new career-high for the second-straight week with a 38.950.

  • Towson travels to Morgantown, West Virginia next Sunday for a tri-meet at West Virginia with EAGL rival George Washington beginning at 2 p.m.
