Flacco Added to STATS FCS Walter Payton Award Watch List

TOWSON, Md. – Towson University quarterback Tom Flacco has been added to the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award Watch List, announced on Thursday.

The Walter Payton Award is given annually, since 1987, to the top offensive player in FCS football.  The preseason watch list included 25 players.  Flacco was placed on this list by the first round of additions.

Flacco currently stands as one of the best multi-threat quarterbacks in college football, standing fourth in FCS with 350.8 yards of total offense per game and a 68.5% completion rate plus 14th in passing yards per game at 278.3 and completions per game at 22.5.  The redshirt junior leads the CAA, which currently has seven ranked teams in FCS, in total offense and passing yards per game.

So far in 2018 through six games, Flacco has earned 1,670 passing yards with 15 touchdowns to only five interceptions, adding 435 rushing yards and two rushing scores.

The last Tiger to be nominated for the Walter Payton Award was Terrence West in 2013.  West was one of three finalists that year, leading Towson to the FCS National Championship game.

In 1988, Dave Meggett was the second-ever winner of this award.  Along with West, Towson has had two other finalists: Joe Lee in 1999 and Tony Vinson, who finished third in the voting, in 1993.
