TOWSON, Md. – Saturday night the Towson University women's basketball team returns to SECU Arena for the second home game of the season against La Salle.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. following the home football game against James Madison.
The Series: La Salle Leads (4-1)
Saturday is the first time these teams have met since November of 2014, when the Explorers earned their fourth win of the series. Towson's only win against La Salle came in the 1979-80 season during the Towson Invitational (84-72).
Last Time Out
The Tigers are coming off a big win over UMass on Sunday, the first-ever program win over the Minutewomen. Led by redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter, Towson led the entire game and secured the first win of the season. Jeter dropped 27 points against UMass and led the team in steals with five. Sophomore
Jalynn Holmes also scored in the double digits with 16 points and team-high five assists. Freshman
Janeen Camp had a strong performance with nine points, five blocked shots and four rebounds in just 13 minutes of action. As a team the Tigers shot 42.9 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from three and 63.6 percent from the line.
Scouting the Explorers
La Salle is having a slow start to the year with a 0-3 record entering the weekend, currently 13th in A10 standings. The Explorers recently fell to Harvard on the road on Wednesday, 88-43. Leading the offense is Rayshel Brown with an average 8.7 points per game, she is also second on the team in rebounds with six per game. Shalina Miller leads the team in boards with 23 total, a 7.7 average. Shooting troubles are plaguing the Explorers with a team 23.1 field goal percentage through the first three games. La Salle's scoring margin is -25.4 and has scored a total 136 points this season.
Last Time Against La Salle
Towson last faced the Explorers at the LIU Turkey Classic on Nov. 29, 2014 and fell 62-49. The Tigers were led by
LaTorri Hines-Allen who scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Towson took the lead just once in that game, four minutes in, but La Salle held the advantage the rest of the game. The Explorers scored 19 points off turnovers and a strong first half helped seal the win.
Jeter Jumps In
In her first season suiting up in Black and Gold,
Kionna Jeter has started off strong. The junior college transfer received honors this week as the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week. Jeter averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 steals in Towson's two games last week. The guard scored 13 points against Wake Forest, along with six rebounds, before her standout game on Sunday. Jeter leads the league in steals, is tied for first in free throw shooting percentage, third in scoring and ninth in assists.
Conference Leaders
Along with Jeter's appearance on several CAA stat leaderboards, a handful of Tigers are holding spots in other categories.
Janeen Camp leads the CAA in blocked shots and is tied for 10th in offensive rebounds,
Jalynn Holmes is fourth in three-point field goal percentage and ninth in scoring while
Ryan Holder is sixth in steals. Aislynn Flynn is 10th in the conference in defensive rebounds while
Maia Lee is fifth for offensive and
Q. Murray is second in minutes played with an average of 36.
Tiger Cub Alert
Wednesday was the early signing day for national letters of intent and joining Towson next year is guard Maggie Sharp. Sharp hails from Stafford, Virginia and is beginning her senior season at Mountain View High School. Last season she averaged 25 points per game and scored a career high 52 points against Riverbend. She holds several program records including career points and three-point field goals made.
