TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team is nearly halfway through its nonconference schedule, approaching game six of the season tomorrow at George Washington University.
The Tigers travel Tuesday to Washington, D.C. for the 7 p.m. tip at the Charles E. Smith Center. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and
Ben Rosenbaum will be on the call for the Towson Sports Network.
The Series: GW Leads (9-2)
Towson has won two games in the series, once in 1980 and again in 2013 on the road. The Colonials have won the last two matchups, including one in SECU Arena last November, a 66-43 win. Six members of the current Tiger roster saw time against GW last year, including junior
Nukiya Mayo who led the team in rebounds with eight. Towson's last win on Dec. 7, 2013 was a close finish, 68-67, as Tanisha McTiller made a free throw with just two seconds on the clock to seal the win.
Scouting the Colonials
George Washington is coming off two losses in the Cancun Challenge after falling to Georgia Tech and No. 15 N.C. State. Mei-Lyn Bautista is leading the Colonials in scoring, averaging 11.7 points per game, while Neila Luma leads in rebounds with 5.3 per game. Bautista also leads the team in assists with 3.5 per game and steals with three per game. As a team, George Washington is shooting 33.3 percent from the field, 30.4 from three and 56.8 from the free throw line. GW's only win this season is over Princeton, a 64-49 victory at home in November.
Scouting the Tigers
Towson is coming off a split week during the Thanksgiving holiday, after taking down UMBC last Tuesday night and falling to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon.
Kionna Jeter continues to lead the Tigers in points, averaging 24.6 per game, and steals averaging 3.8. Junior
Nukiya Mayo holds the rebounding lead with an average of 6.8 per game while also contributing 11.5 points per game. Leading in assists is
Q. Murray with 17 total, 3.4 per game.
Around the League
In conference statistics, the Tigers are second in scoring averaging 74.4 points per game, second in rebounding with an average of 45 and second in blocked shots with 4.8 per game.
Kionna Jeter is not only leading her team, but is leading the CAA in scoring and steals, is second in three-point field goal percentage and three's per game. Jeter is also third in the conference in field goal percentage and seventh in free throw percentage.
Nukiya Mayo is ninth in the CAA in rebounds, and eighth in free throw percentage. Freshman
Janeen Camp is second in blocked shots, averaging 1.8 per game herself, while
Ryan Holder is also in the top-10, ranking sixth in blocked shots. Holder joins Jeter in the steals leaderboard, fourth in the league, while
Q. Murray rounds out the Towson representatives at No. 10 in assists.
Strength on a National Level
While the Tigers and members of the team are in the top-10 of several categories, Towson is also seen in a number of NCAA stats categories. Only 30 teams are ranked in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game: currently the Tigers are No. 4. In rebounds per game Towson is 35th, and also 35th in blocked shots per game, both categories rank all 349 teams. The Tigers are also 41st in turnovers forced, averaging 21.6 per game.
Kionna Jeter appears again on the leaderboard in scoring, currently seventh in the nation, and steals per game at No. 12. There are 250 players ranked in blocks per game,
Janeen Camp is 70th, and out of 30 players ranked for offensive rebounds
