TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team hosts its annual STEM Day game on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m., facing local foe Loyola University (Md.).
Attendance is free, while there will be sections specifically for the groups of students to sit, fans will be free to sit in open sections. The game will be streamed on TowsonTigers.com on the Towson Sports Network and live stats will be available as well.
STEM Day
This annual event brings in kids from area schools to watch a mid-day basketball game and participate in activities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). There are students from 23 schools in Baltimore and the surrounding areas coming to cheer on the Tigers.
STEM Growth at Towson
Towson University is continuing to grow in the STEM field, highlighted by the new science building under construction. In the fall of 2017, Towson University President Kim Schatzel broke ground on the complex that will be open in 2020. The new science complex will be the biggest building on campus, with 50 teaching laboratories, 30 research laboratories, 50 classrooms, 10 student collaborative spaces, eight lecture halls and one outdoor classroom leading to the Glen Arboretum. The complex will also have rain garden, planetarium, observatory, rooftop, greenhouse, museum and vivarium. This new complex will support the growth in STEM enrollment at Towson. The new home of The Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics, which promotes a wide range of opportunities for authentic research experiences, and is home of numerous STEM education and outreach programs.
The Series: Towson Leads (29-13)
The Tigers and Greyhounds have been facing off in basketball since the 1977-78 season when Towson took a 68-64 win at home. Last December the two teams met on Loyola's campus and the Tigers took a 76-67 victory, and Towson has won the last three meetings. Tuesday will be the 43rd meeting between the teams that are separated by about four miles.
Scouting the Tigers
Towson is coming off a trip to No. 12 Syracuse over the weekend, which ended in a win for the home team. The Tigers had a handful of players mark "firsts" in their college career; freshman
Janeen Camp who had her first double-digit game and a career-high 11 points in 21 minutes, also a career high for her. Redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter leads the offense with 22.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Q. Murray is leading the team in assists with 3.7 per game.
Scouting the Greyhounds
Loyola comes to Towson with an 0-7 record, most recently falling to Mount St. Mary's. The Greyhounds played six games without scoring more than 49 points, before breaking through to score 67 at The Mount over the weekend. Leading the offense is Isabella Tehrien, averaging 11.4 points per game, while Bri Betz-White is the other player averaging double digits at 10.1 points per game. Stephanie Karcz is leading the team in rebounds, averaging 9.6 per game. Common opponents between the two teams are George Washington, Mount St. Mary's and Saint Joseph's.
Get Those Boards
After Sunday's game, Towson is fifth in the nation in offensive rebounds. The Tigers average 20 offensive boards per game, with a season-best 24 at Mount St. Mary's. Towson has had three games with 45 total rebounds and has a close margin in defensive boards against opponents, 177-186, but holds a 137-91 advantage on the offensive grabs.
On the Road Again
Tuesday's game is the Tigers' last home game until Friday, Jan. 11, 2019. Next Monday Towson travels to face Saint Joseph's, before a short break for final exams. The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Dec. 20, at West Virginia before traveling to Marshall for a Dec. 22 game. After the winter break Towson opens Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) action on Friday, Jan. 4 of next year at Drexel. Two trips to Philadelphia and an extended trip to the Mountain State are in the near future for the Tigers.
