Tigers Post Fourth-Highest Score in Program History

TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University women's gymnastics team totaled the fourth-highest score in program history and the second-highest under eighth-year head coach Vicky May as the Tigers finished second in a tri-meet with George Washington and Rutgers Friday night at SECU Arena.

Towson (9-12) had eight career highs set or equaled en route to totaling 196.250 points, just 0.050 behind first-place George Washington. Rutgers finished third with 193.825 points after edging the Tigers by 0.350 points last week.

The team's highest score under May is 196.525 points set on Mar. 15, 2015 at George Washington.

Towson totaled season-highs on vault (48.950) and bars (49.375). The team's score on bars was just 0.025 points shy of the school record set on Mar. 10, 2000 in a tri-meet with New Hampshire and Pittsburgh.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers began the meet on vault where they had three career highs, highlighted by a 9.900 from junior Cortni Baker who finished second with the 10th-highest score in program history. Senior Gabriella Yarussi finished fourth with a career-high 9.850 while senior Tyra McKellar was fifth after tying her career high with a 9.825.
  • Towson posted four career highs to sweep the top four spots on bars. McKellar had the fourth-highest score in program history with a career-best 9.925 while Baker, junior Mary Elle Arduino and freshman Tess Zientek all had career highs with a 9.875 to finish tied for second.
  • Yarussi and Arduino finished in a tie for third on beam with 9.875. Sophomore Melissa Temkov came in eighth with a 9.750.
  • Temkov finished second on floor with a career-high 9.875 while Baker and Yarussi were tied for eighth with a 9.825.
  • For the first time all season, the Tigers did not have anyone total an all-around score after Arduino was scratched from floor in favor of junior Erin Tucker.

  • The Tigers return to action on Sunday when they travel to George Washington for a rematch with the Colonials and Rutgers while welcoming Maryland.
