TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team is literally into the "home stretch" of its 2018 regular season schedule.
The Tigers (29-9 overall) start a five-game homestand and a closing stretch of playing 13 of their final 17 games at home when they host Morgan State (18-16) in a doubleheader at the Tiger Softball Stadium Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
Both teams enter with six-game winning streaks.
LAST TIME OUT: Towson outscored Drexel, 29-12, in sweeping a three-game series in Philadelphia this past weekend. Towson hit .416 as a team.
Kendyl Scott hit .750 (9-of-12) to lead the Tigers. Nine players had at least one hit during the three game sweep. It was the Tigers' first sweep of Drexel in a three-game series since 2013. Three of
Brook Miko's seven hits were doubles. In posting a 0.95 earned run average,
Megan Dejter won two games and collected a save.
HOME SWEET HOME: Towson is 14-1 at home this season and 12-0 against non-conference opponents. In addition to outscoring their opponents, 100-32, the Tigers are hitting .343 at home. Forty-one percent of its 124 hits have gone for extra bases. Dejter is 7-0 with a 1.00 earned run average at home this season with six complete games and one shutout. Scott is hitting .532 (25-for-47) in home games this season. Miko (.450 average) and
Nicole Stockinger (.400) have combined for 45 RBIs.
GREAT SCOTT: Scott was named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week Monday after helping the Tigers enjoy a perfect week. In helping Towson extend its winning streak to six games, Scott had week to remember. Scott was 13-for-20 (.650 average) with three doubles, two homers, a triple, and a 1.200 slugging percentage in two wins over George Mason and three wins against conference rival Drexel. She also scored seven runs. Scott had three hits in an 11-3 over George Mason, three hits in a 9-2 victory over Drexel, and four hits in an 11-9 win over Drexel. Scott hit a home run in each game of a doubleheader sweep against Drexel last Friday. During the series finale, a 9-1 Towson victory, Scott set the Towson single-season record for doubles.
DOUBLE UP: The Tigers lead the country in doubles per game (1.97). In addition, Scott is second nationally in doubles and doubles per game.
Madison Wilson is sixth in doubles and Miko is 14th.
NATIONALLY SPEAKING: The Tigers are fourth in batting average (.335), sixth in scoring (6.79), 10th in slugging percentage (.519), 14th in on-base percentage (.411) and 20th in win-loss percentage (.763).
RPI REPORT: The latest NCAA RPI rankings in Division I saw the following CAA teams in order: Hofstra (22), James Madison (34), Charleston (82), Towson (122), Elon (139), UNCW (178), Delaware (188), and Drexel (231).
A LOOK AT MORGAN STATE: Winners of eight of their last 10 games, the Bears swept Norfolk State over the weekend. Morgan State's top offensive player has been Damali Young, who has a .431 batting average, 44 hits, and 16 stolen bases. Giselle Alvarez (.368 average) and Gab Gorosave (.333) have 32 hits each. Gorosave leads the Bears with 25 RBIs. Amy Begg and Steph Rundlett are Morgan State's top pitchers. Morgan State is 7-2 on the road.
UP NEXT: The Tigers return to CAA competition when they host Elon in a key three-game series. Elon and Towson play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon. The series concludes with a single game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
