Big Inning the Difference

ELON, N.C. – Elon University used a six-run second inning to gain the lead for good in defeating Towson University, 9-6, Sunday afternoon at Latham Park.

Key Plays
  • The Phoenix took advantage of the Tigers not being able to turn an inning-ending double play to score three more runs as part of a six-run second inning.
  • The Tigers had base runners in the sixth and seventh innings, but hit into inning-ending double plays in both frames.
 
How it Happened
  • The Tigers got on the board in the first inning as Billy Lennox hit a solo home run to left center.
  • Richard Miller started the second with a double to center and scored on a Charlie Watters sacrifice bunt.
  • The Phoenix answered back in the bottom of the second as Ty Adcock drove in a run with a double to left center and scored on a wild pitch.
  • After the Tigers nearly turned a double play to end the second, Elon added a couple more runs to take a 6-2 lead.
  • Towson came back in the third inning to push across three runs. Lennox started the inning with a base hit and Colin Gimblet followed with a walk. Andrew Cassard drove in a run with a base hit to center field.
  • Charlie Waters drove in his second run of the game with a single through the left side. When the ball was misplayed in left, Cassard was able to hustle around to score from first.
  • Elon extended the lead back to four runs in the fourth on a pair of RBI hits and an error on a play at the plate.
  • The Tigers got a run in the ninth after Richie Palacios walked and stole second. With two outs, Gimblet hit a ball off the leg of the pitcher for a RBI single.
  • Alex Cuas (1-5) took the loss after allowing six runs on three hits and five walks over 1.1 innings.
  • Robbie Welhaf (4-4) allowed just four hits and struck out four over 5.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Billy Lennox hit his second home run of the week with a solo shot to left center in the first. He finished the game 2-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored.
  • Colin Gimblet finished the day 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
  • Charlie Watters drove in a pair of runs with a sacrifice bunt and single up the middle.
  • Richie Palacios drew a pair of walks in the game and has now walked 48 times this season. It is the 11th time this season he has walked at least twice in a game.
  • Dean Stramara kept the Tigers in the game as he allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and four strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
 
On Deck
The Tigers close out the season with a three-game series against James Madison on May 17-19 at Schuerholz Park. First pitch for the first two games is set for 3 p.m., with Senior Day on Saturday set for 1 p.m.
