TOWSON, Md. – As the 2018-19 academic year gets underway next, Towson University head gymnastics coach
Vicki May has added Mary Fredericks as an assistant coach.
Â
"I am thrilled to welcome Mary and her family to the Towson gymnastics family," said May of the newest addition. "Mary will be invaluable in our pursuit to elevate the women's gymnastics program to the next level. Mary's technical knowledge and experience as an elite gymnast gives her the ability to both push and relate to our young women in a way that will allow them to grow as competitors and confident women."
Â
Fredericks comes to Towson after spending a season in Provo, Utah as a volunteer assistant coach with the BYU Cougars last season. While with the Cougars, Fredericks focused on coaching the uneven bars, while assisting with vaults and floor exercises. Additionally, Fredericks helped the Cougars develop their choreography.
Â
"I am super excited to be joining Towson gymnastics and grateful for the opportunity Vicki has given me to work with the team," said Fredericks of her new post. "It sounds cliché, but I cannot wait to meet the team and get to work. I believe Towson has a lot of potential and it's exciting to be part of helping the team reach that potential. Last season, Guard Young at BYU gave me the opportunity to work with the team and we saw a lot of success. More than anything I want the team here at Towson to be the best that it can possibly be and I am grateful to be a part of it."
Â
An accomplished gymnast in her own right, Fredericks was an alternate for the 1996 Olympic Team and was a member of the 1995 US Pan American Team that claimed gold. She was a member of the US National Team for seven years, helping the Americans take bronze at Worlds in 1995. Fredericks is a seven-time national champion on the uneven bars and a four-time international champion on the same apparatus.
Â
Fredericks brings a wealth of experience to Towson, including owning an operating RoadToNationals.com, the official NCAA gymnastics statistical provider and coaches association websites. Prior to her stop in Provo, Fredericks was the director of women's gymnastics and head coach at the Airtime Training Center in Springville, Utah from 2014-17. During the 2011-12 season, Fredericks served as the assistant women's gymnastics coach at Southeast Missouri State.
Â
Additionally, Fredericks has worked as a massage therapist for US Speedskating and BYU. From 2012-14, Fredericks was an assistant diving coach and a volunteer assistant track and field coach at BYU.
Â
Fredericks graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa.
