Towson Travels to Charleston and Wilmington

TOWSON, Md. – Another road weekend of conference action approaches for the Towson University women's basketball team.
 
The Tigers (RV) travel to face the College of Charleston in South Carolina on Friday before heading back up the coast to Wilmington, North Carolina for a Sunday game at UNCW.
 
Last Time Out
Towson is coming off its second-straight weekend sweep in conference action after defeating Northeastern last Friday and Hofstra on Sunday. In Sunday's win the Tigers led the entire game with only two minutes of the game tied, but never allowing the Pride to take the lead. Three players scored in double figures and the team had its second consecutive game shooting above 49 percent.
 
The Series: Charleston (Towson Leads 8-4)
Friday will be the 13th meeting between Towson and the College of Charleston. The Tigers hold the series lead on the road 3-2, and won the last game against the Cougars in Charleston 83-58. Towson's biggest win over Charleston was last January. The Cougars also took their biggest win in the series last season, on Dec. 31, 2017 in Towson, with an 80-67 win.
 
The Series: UNCW (UNCW Leads 23-10)
Last season the Tigers broke a losing streak to UNCW that dated back to the 2012-13 season. Towson grabbed a home win over the Seahawks in 2018 but fell on the road in Wilmington and in the first round of the CAA Women's Basketball Championship at Drexel. In North Carolina, UNCW leads the series 12-3.
 
Scouting the Tigers (10-5)
Towson enters the weekend on a five-game winning streak that began on Dec. 22, 2018. The Tigers are tied for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with James Madison following a 4-0 start in conference play. Redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter leads the offense with 21.1 points per game while junior Nukiya Mayo is contributing 13.1 points per game. Mayo is leading the team in rebounds with 7.1 per game, and senior Maia Lee has broken into the top rebounders on the team with 6.3 per game. Q. Murray holds the lead in assists with 4.0 per game.
 
Scouting the Cougars (5-9)
The College of Charleston enters the game with a 5-9 record and one win in conference play. The Cougars are led by Darien Huff with 13.1 points per game and Deja Ford with 12.9. Charleston is averaging 66.7 points per game this season and has wins over William & Mary, South Carolina State and North Greenville. Bri Sullivan is the team's leading rebounder with 5.1 per game while Tyler Collins leads the team in assists with 5.35 per game.
 
Scouting the Seahawks (9-5)
UNCW will face James Madison on Friday night before Sunday's matchup with the Tigers. The Seahawks are 9-5 with a 2-1 CAA mark and wins over East Carolina, Longwood and Grand Canyon. Shrita Parker is leading the team in scoring with 18.6 points per game, with GiGi Smith contributing 14.4. Paige Powell leads the team in rebounds with 6.4 per game and Parker is dishing out a team-best 3.4 assists per game.
 
Leading the Way
As Towson is tied for first place in the CAA with JMU, the team has players in the top groups for several stat categories. Kionna Jeter is leading the conference in points (21.1), steals (3.4) and 3-point field goal shooting percentage (37.3). Nukiya Mayo is fourth in the CAA in rebounding (7.1), a category that Maia Lee (6.5) is ninth in, and is ninth in free throw shooting percentage (71.0). Q. Murray remains third in the league in assists (4.1), with the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6). Freshman Janeen Camp is second in the conference in blocks with 2.1 per game, Ryan Holder is fourth (1.3) and Nukiya Mayo is sixth (1.1). The Tigers lead the CAA in offensive rebounds (16.8) and are second in the league in rebounds (43.8).
 
National Momentum
Kionna Jeter remains among the nation's top-25 scorers. She is 13th in points per game (21.1) and No. 29 in total points scored (316). The Spartanburg, South Carolina native is also 12th in the nation in steals per game (3.4), 17th in steals (51) and 36th in field goals made (114). Janeen Camp has been holding on to a spot in the top-50 of shot blockers. The freshman is 34th in blocked shots per game (2.1) and 38th in blocked shots this season (32). Q. Murray is in the conversation for assists as the NCAA ranks 250 players in assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio. The guard is No. 145 and No. 135 respectively. Ryan Holder and Nukiya Mayo also join Camp in the blocked shots per game top-250, while Holder is 143rd nationally in blocked shots total. As a team, the Tigers are No. 7 in the nation in blocked shots per game, No. 8 in blocked shots, No. 12 in offensive rebounds and No. 19 in rebounds per game. This week Towson was receiving votes in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 Poll.
 
Free Admission for Government Employees
While the government shutdown continues, Towson Athletics is offering free family entertainment. Next weekend, starting Thursday, Jan. 23, are four straight home games. The Towson men's basketball team plays Thursday night at 7 p.m., followed by the women on Friday night, the men return on Saturday afternoon and the women are back in SECU Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. Government employees need to bring their government ID to Gate A at SECU Arena to receive two free tickets, a promotion that runs all weekend.
 
Autism Speaks at SECU Arena
With the Autism Speaks game slated for Sunday, Feb. 17 against the College of Charleston, the women's basketball team will have events leading up to the game, working with the men's basketball team. On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the week's activities begin with a diversity speaker workshop in the Minnegan Room of the field house at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. The following day both the women's and men's teams will host a clinic in SECU Arena with a group from the Hussman Center. The men's Autism Speaks game is Saturday, Feb. 16 against Drexel. The Autism Awareness Week is part of Autism Speaks Coaches Powering Forward. Last season more than 375 NCAA coaches participated in the event by wearing a blue puzzle piece pin during the game. There will be blue T-shirts for all fans at both games.
 
CAA Championship Tickets on Sale 
Ticket books are now on sale for the CAA Women's Basketball Championship hosted by the University of Delaware. The tournament runs from March 13-16 at the Bob Carpenter Center. All-session books start at $35 for general admission seats, with single-session general admission tickets beginning at $8. There are also single-session group tickets on sale, and students who attend schools in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) have free admission with a student ID. Tickets can be purchased through the Towson ticket office with Scott Casten, or by calling the Delaware ticket office at (302) 831-2257.
