TOWSON, Md.- Big steps is what senior Zachary Bishop and the Towson University men's swimming and diving team look to do as they travel to Newark to face the Blue Hens. The meet will take place at 1 p.m. inside Rawstrom Natatorium at CBS.
"I think the meet this weekend will be another big step towards our end of year goals," said Bishop. "We have been doing really well in training since returning from Christmas and we had a pretty good meet last weekend against Drexel."
Looking ahead, the Tigers have three more meets before the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships. The seniors are beyond ready to make a statement.
"I, like many other guys on the team, are very excited for how the team will do come conference championships," said Bishop.
Tigers Last Time Out
The Tigers fell to Drexel 169-127. Jack Saunderson led the way for the Tigers, winning two events as well as being a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay. He had a time of 1:46.38 in the 200-yard butterfly and a time of 47.68 in the 100-yard butterfly. The winning relay with him was Owen Robinson, Ryan O'Leary and Matt Essing (1:31.13). Essing was also first in the 50-yard freestyle (20.72) and the 100-yard freestyle (45.42).
Will Canny was first in the 1-meter diving (277.65) and the 3-meter diving (310.85) competition.
Matt Kenney came in second in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:47.80), while teammate Evan Brophy finished in third (9:49.24). Ryan Baldino saw second place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.610). Kenny Afolabi-Brown was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (58:08).
Scouting the Blue Hens
Delaware competed against Drexel on Jan. 5. The Blue Hens finished the meet with a score of 93.00.
Let's make a Splash
* Canny was named Colonial Athlete Association (CAA) men's Diver of the week for the fourth time after placing first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competition. His time of 310.85 was a PR for him.
* He was also named New Day USA Student-Athlete of the week alongside gymnast Emerson Hurst.
Tigers in the Community
* Towson is the Division I national champion of the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Competition for the Fall 2018 semester. Towson completed the most community service hours among all schools in the competition, including 75 different Division I departments and approximately 300 total programs across the country.
* Towson's men and women's swimming and diving team hosted their second clinic with the Special Olympics team on Nov. 10 at Burdick Pool.
