TOWSON, Md. – This weekend the Towson University women's basketball team returns to SECU Arena for a two-game homestand beginning Friday night.
The Tigers host Elon at 7 p.m. on Friday and William & Mary at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Both games will be live streamed on TowsonTigers.com.
Last Time Out
Towson is coming off its second road weekend in conference action after defeating the College of Charleston, 77-61, and falling to UNCW. Sunday the Tigers fought hard with two 20-point performances from
Kionna Jeter and
Nukiya Mayo, and 12 rebounds from
Maia Lee, but fell in the final seconds to the Seahawks 77-73.
The Elon Series: Phoenix Lead (7-1)
Friday night Towson hosts Elon in the ninth meeting of the series. In the last meeting, the Phoenix took its fourth-straight win over the Tigers in SECU Arena 71-45. Towson's only win of the series came in 2016 at home, Elon holds the series lead in Towson with a 3-1 record.
The William & Mary Series: Tribe Lead (19-14)
Sunday afternoon one of the two Virginia-based opponents in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) arrives to take on the Tigers. William & Mary holds the series lead and won the last meeting 75-63 at SECU Arena. Last season the teams split with a win on the road for Towson. In Maryland the Tribe is 9-7 against the Tigers.
Scouting the Tigers (11-6, 5-1 CAA)
After last Friday's win over the College of Charleston, Towson took sole possession of first place in the CAA for the first time in program history. Currently the Tigers are tied for first place with James Madison. Towson and JMU will face off next Sunday in Virginia. The Tigers lead the conference in scoring, paced by redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter who is leading the league in scoring herself. Jeter is averaging 21.8 points per game while junior
Nukiya Mayo is posting 13.9. Mayo leads the team in rebounds with 7.2 per game, with
Maia Lee grabbing 7.1 per game.
Q. Murray is leading the team in assists, second in the conference, with 4.5 per game.
Scouting the Phoenix (7-9, 2-3 CAA)
Elon has three players averaging double digits, led by Emily Maupin with 13.3 points per game, Lexi Mercer and Jada Graves are posting 11.5 and 10.0 points per game respectively. Maupin is the team's leading rebounder with 6.8 per game, while Saadia Munford is leading in assists with 3.1 per game. The Phoenix had wins over North Carolina Central, Davidson and Hampton in the nonconference, with CAA wins over Hofstra and Charleston. Elon is the third-best scoring team in the conference, averaging 68.8 points per game, with Maupin leading the league in field goal shooting percentage (53.4).
Scouting the Tribe (10-6, 3-2 CAA)
William & Mary also has three players averaging more than 10 points per game, led by Bianca Boggs who is scoring 17.3 a night. The Tribe is in fifth place in the conference standings with wins over Hofstra, UNCW and Elon. Boggs leads the team in rebounds with 6.7 per game while also holding the most assists, 3.8 per game. William & Mary is the third-best 3-point shooting team in the CAA, with a 35.6 shooting percentage. In the nonconference schedule the Tribe took wins over Richmond, ECU, Loyola and George Washington.
The Tiger Train is Rollin'
With the best start since the 2011-12 season, Towson is looking to extend its winning record. The Tigers received votes in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll for the second-straight week. As a team Towson continues to hold its place nationally in rebounding, currently 27th with 42.9 per game. The Tigers are also 15th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (16), eighth in blocked shots per game (6.1) and 12th in total blocked shots (103).
Total Team Effort
Towson has several notable contributors this season, including redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter who is ninth in the nation in scoring. Freshman
Janeen Camp is 40th in the nation in blocked shots per game (1.88) and 43rd in total blocked shots (32). Jeter is also in the top-20 in total points, ranking 12th (370), 13th in steals per game (3.29), 11th in field goals made (136) and 14th in total steals (56).
Nukiya Mayo joins Camp in the top shot blockers (1.19) and is in the top-250 in rebounders (7.2) with
Maia Lee (7.1).
Ryan Holder is also in the top-200 in blocked shots per game (1.12).
Q. Murray is ranked in the top-100 in assists per game (4.5), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.85) and total assists (76).
Free Admission for Government Employees
This weekend Towson University is supporting federal government employees with free tickets to all four home games at SECU Arena. The Towson men's basketball team plays tonight at 7 p.m., followed by the women on Friday night. The men return on Saturday afternoon and the women are back in SECU Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. Government employees need to bring their government ID to Gate A at SECU Arena to receive two free tickets, a promotion that runs all weekend.
National Champions of Service
In the fall 2018 semester the Towson University athletic teams completed the most community service hours among all schools in the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Competition. Tiger student-athletes and staff completed 5,583 hours of community service from September to November in the Greater Baltimore Area. Towson's national championship in community service will be celebrated at the February 14th men's basketball game against Delaware.
Autism Speaks at SECU Arena
With the Autism Speaks game slated for Sunday, Feb. 17 against the College of Charleston, the women's basketball team will have events leading up to the game, working with the men's basketball team. On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the week's activities begin with a diversity speaker workshop in the Minnegan Room of the field house at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. The following day both the women's and men's teams will host a clinic in SECU Arena with a group from the Hussman Center. The men's Autism Speaks game is Saturday, Feb. 16 against Drexel. The Autism Awareness Week is part of Autism Speaks Coaches Powering Forward. Last season more than 375 NCAA coaches participated in the event by wearing a blue puzzle piece pin during the game. There will be blue T-shirts for all fans at both games.
CAA Championship Tickets on Sale
Ticket books are now on sale for the CAA Women's Basketball Championship hosted by the University of Delaware. The tournament runs from March 13-16 at the Bob Carpenter Center. All-session books start at $35 for general admission seats, with single-session general admission tickets beginning at $8. There are also single-session group tickets on sale, and students who attend schools in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) have free admission with a student ID.
