Towson Hits the Road for First CAA Games

TOWSON, Md. – Friday night opens the conference schedule for the Towson University women's basketball team with a game at Drexel. It is the opening weekend of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action for the women, with five games slated for tomorrow.
 
 The Tigers tip in Philadelphia at 7 p.m. against the Dragons before traveling to Delaware for a Sunday 2 p.m. game. Towson Sports Network's Ben Rosenbaum and Rashad Christian will be on the call for both games, while there will be free video streams for each one which are linked on the schedule page.
 
Last Time Out
Towson is entering the back end of a five-game road stretch that began on Monday, Dec. 10, 2018. The Tigers have won two of their last three games, most recently at Marshall on Dec. 22. Led by redshirt-junior Q. Murray with 20 points, the road team came back from a 12-point deficit at halftime to take the win. Towson had three players in double figures including Murray, with 18 points from Kionna Jeter and 16 from Nukiya Mayo.
 
The Series: Drexel Leads (56-19)
Friday will be the 76th meeting between these two teams, a series that began in 1983. The Dragons have won the last 19 meetings. In 2010 the Tigers defeated Drexel 53-48 at home, the most recent win for Towson in the series.
 
The Series: Delaware Leads (55-21)
Sunday's game at Delaware will be the 77th meeting against the border rival. The Blue Hens hold the series advantage and have won the last seven consecutive meetings. Towson's last win over Delaware came in 2015, a 56-59 victory at home.
 
Scouting the Tigers
The Tigers enter the weekend 6-5, their first winning nonconference record since the 2016-17 season. Led by redshirt-sophomore Kionna Jeter, who is averaging 20.2 points per game, Towson has strength in several places. Nukiya Mayo is also averaging double figures with 11.6 points per game, while leading the team in rebounds with 6.3. Running the offense is Q. Murray with 3.8 assists per game, ranking third in the CAA in assists per game and assist/turnover ratio. Towson is currently 11th in the nation in offensive rebounds and 10th in blocked shots per game. Jeter remains in the top-25 nationally in scoring and is 26th in steals per game with 3.09, she leads the CAA in steals. Freshman Janeen Camp is 26th in the nation in blocked shots per game with 2.1, she is second in the conference.
 
Scouting the Dragons
Drexel is off to a hot start with an 8-3 record including wins over Saint Joseph's, Bucknell, La Salle and most recently Richmond. The Dragons are led by junior Bailey Greenberg who averages 16.9 points per game, she also leads the team in rebounds with 7.5. Junior guard Aubree Brown lead the team in assists with 3.7. Drexel's defense is currently first in the nation, holding opponents to 46.0 points per game, the most a team has scored against Drexel is 71 from Wright State. On the flip side the Dragons are last in the CAA in scoring, averaging 55.8 points per game.
 
Scouting the Blue Hens
Before Sunday's game, Delaware will host James Madison on Friday night in its first CAA game of the year. The Blue Hens are ninth in the conference right now with a 5-7 record and wins over Lafayette, Gardner-Webb and Saint Joseph's. Leading the offense is Abby Gonzales with 10.6 points per game, the only Blue Hen in double figures. Jasmine Dickey is not only leading her team in rebounds but also the CAA with 9.5 per game. Delaware has two players in the league's top-10 of assists per game in Paris McBride (3.6) and Gonzales (3.5), McBride is fifth in the CAA while Gonzales is eighth. The Blue Hens are second in the conference in steals per game, ranking in the top-75 nationally with 9.9.
 
Nonconference Highlights
In Diane Richardson's second year at the helm she took her team to face tough opponents in the nonconference schedule. The former West Virginia University assistant coach returned to face the Mountaineers, along with two ACC opponents, No. 12 Syracuse and Wake Forest, all on the road. Towson also took on four teams from the Atlantic 10 Conference, taking three wins. All the Tiger freshmen have seen playing time, including first career starts for Aislinn Flynn and Janeen Camp.
 
Returning Home
Next weekend Towson will open the home CAA schedule against Northeastern on Friday and Hofstra on Sunday. The Jan. 11 game against the Huskies will be the Tigers' first game at SECU Arena since Dec. 4, a full month and seven days without playing on their home court.
