Women's Basketball Returns to SECU to Host Mount St. Mary's

TOWSON, Md. – This weekend the Towson University women's basketball team returns home after a two-game trip to the west coast to host local opponent Mount Saint Mary's on Saturday.
 
The 2 p.m. game will be in SECU Arena and broadcasted on FloSports.com. Live stats will also be available through TowsonTigers.com, all streaming links can be found on the women's basketball schedule page of the website.
 
Admission is free for students and the first 500 fans to arrive will receive a free black T-shirt with the 2019-20 home schedule on the back. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 1-855-TU-Tiger.
 
Last Time Out
The Tigers are coming off a tough road loss at San Diego. Three players finished in double figures with Kionna Jeter one rebound away from a double-double, but it was not enough to hold off the Toreros. Towson trailed at halftime and fought back in the third and fourth, cutting the lead to nine points but free throws for the home team continued to extend the lead. Jeter and Nukiya Mayo led the Tigers with 17 points each and nine boards from Jeter. Sophomore Myasia Jones also dropped 16.
 
Scouting the Tigers
Senior Nukiya Mayo continues to lead the Towson offense. The Bronx, New York native is averaging 18 points per game with a season-best 22 against San Diego State last weekend. She also leads the team in rebounds averaging 8.3 per game. Kionna Jeter and Q. Murray round out the players averaging double figures with 16.7 and 11 points per game respectively. Defensively Tess Borgosz is leading in blocks with seven through three games while Murray has a team best seven steals so far. Murray also leads the team in assists with 13. Mya Jones has the best free throw shooting average of the squad, with 12-of-15 made she is shooting .800 from the line.
 
Scouting the Mountaineers
The Mount comes to town with a 1-2 record, coming off a 94-40 win over Frostburg State on Monday. The Mountaineers fell to Kentucky and Indiana to start the season. Leading the Mount St. Mary's offense is Jatarrikah Settle with 12.3 points per game while Kendall Bresee is averaging a team best 5.3 rebounds per game. Three other players from The Mount are averaging at least 8.7 points per game and as a team the Mountaineers are shooting 40.6 percent from the field.
 
The Mount Saint Mary's Series
Saturday will be the 27th meeting between these two teams, Mount St. Mary's leading the series 15-11. Towson has won four of the last six meetings, but fell to the Mountaineers last season. The last Tiger win over the Emmitsburg, Maryland team came in 2007.
 
Last Time Against The Mount
Last November the Black and Gold traveled to face Mount St. Mary's and fell 87-78. Kionna Jeter led the Tigers with 27 points, Ryan Holder posted 19 and three players had a team-best six rebounds each. The home team saw three players in double figures including a 30-point performance from Michaela Harrison as the Mount shot 45.2 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from three. Mount Saint Mary's led by nine at half and held out for the win in the final two quarters.
 
Tigers in CAA Stats
There are seven games ahead before Towson begins play in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), but the starting five players are holding on to spots in the top-15 of several categories. Currently Nukiya Mayo (18 ppg) and Kionna Jeter (16.7 ppg) are sixth and seventh in scoring. The duo appear again in the top-10 rebounding category, fifth (Mayo, 8.3 rpg) and sixth (Jeter, 7.3 rpg), with Tess Borgosz 11th in the league with 5.7 boards per game. Q. Murray is second in the conference in assists per game with 13 total and 4.3 per game, Jeter is sixth with 3.7. The Tigers have the strongest team representation in the top-11 of blocked shots with Borgosz second (2.3 bpg), Mayo third (1.7 bpg) and Ryan Holder 11th (0.7 bpg). Murray appears again in the top-10 for steals, she is ninth with 2.3 per game. Mayo and Murray are third and fourth in the CAA in minutes played per game.  
 
Tigers in the Community
The Towson University athletics department deems community service as one of its highest priorities to give back to the Greater Baltimore area. For the seventh consecutive year, the department exceeded 10,000 hours of community service to the Greater Baltimore region, finishing with 11,162 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic season. Towson ranked No. 1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition. Towson had a 97% participation rate, attended 118 community service opportunities and volunteered with 19 organizations. Towson won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
 
Looking Ahead
Towson remains home to host American next Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. before returning to the skies to play in the Puerto Rico Clasicó during the week of Thanksgiving. After the holiday tournament the Tigers are home twice more and travel to Rutgers as they close out the nonconference schedule.
