TOWSON, Md. – Wednesday the Towson University women's basketball team will host its annual STEM Day game against Temple.
Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. as school children from the Greater Baltimore Area will be in attendance. The game will be streamed on FloSports and audio is available from the Towson Sports Network. Links for streaming can be found on the women's basketball schedule page on TowsonTigers.com.
Last Time Out
The Tigers are coming off a win over Iona in Puerto Rico, a 75-58 victory, in the Puerto Rico Claisco. Towson was led by redshirt junior
Kionna Jeter with 31 points while
Myasia Jones dropped 14 and
Nukiya Mayo added 11.
Q. Murray also finished in double figures with 10 points. Jeter also led the Tigers on the glass with nine rebounds. At halftime Towson was trailing by three points, the Black and Gold fought back in the third to regain the lead and keep the Gaels at bay, holding Iona to just seven points in the third. Towson then exploded in the fourth with 25 points to seal the win.
Scouting the Tigers
Towson enters the week with a 3-4 record, two wins at home and one in neutral territory.
Kionna Jeter leads the team in scoring with 17.7 points per game followed by
Nukiya Mayo with 15.9 and
Myasia Jones with 11.7. Mayo holds the team lead in rebounds with 7.4 per game with an advantage on the defensive glass grabbing 5.3 per game.
Q. Murray continues to pace the Tigers in assists with four a night, she also leads the team in minutes played.
Scouting the Owls
Temple comes to town with a 4-4 record after falling to Creighton on Friday night in the Cancun Challenge. The Owls also faced North Carolina on Thanksgiving, falling 71-58. Temple's last win came over in-state foe Bucknell, a 72-61 victory on the road. Leading the Owls' offense is Mia Davis with 19.5 points per game, she also leads the team in rebounds with 8.6 on average. Ashley Jones and Marissa Mackins are also posting double figures per game with 16.9 and 10.0 respectively. As a team Temple is averaging 68.3 points per game, shooting 40.8 percent from the field.
First Meeting up Ahead
Wednesday's game will be the first meeting between Towson and Temple in women's basketball. Towson faces a Philadelphia-based team each year in Drexel and last year faced Saint Joseph's and La Salle. The Tigers took a small break between the 2014-15 season and 2017-18 with no meetings against a team from the City of Brotherly Love.
Nukiya Mayo Makes her Mark
Over the Thanksgiving break Towson competed in the Puerto Rico Clasico tournament in San Juan. The Tigers faced Iowa and Iona during the week. In Thursday's game against the Hawkeyes,
Nukiya Mayo scored 22 points, including her 1,000th. Entering the third quarter Mayo was five points away of the career mark. She made a layup early and the next time she got the ball she drained a three, sealing her history. She is the first player during
Diane Richardson's tenure at Towson to reach 1,000 points.
Tigers in the Community
The Towson University athletics department deems community service as one of its highest priorities to give back to the Greater Baltimore area. For the seventh consecutive year, the department exceeded 10,000 hours of community service to the Greater Baltimore region, finishing with 11,162 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic season. Towson ranked No. 1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition. Towson had a 97% participation rate, attended 118 community service opportunities and volunteered with 19 organizations. Towson won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
Looking Ahead
Two games remain in the 2010-19 decade following Wednesday's game against Temple. This weekend the Tigers travel to Rutgers to face the third Big Ten opponent of the season on Sunday afternoon. Towson will then have a break for finals and host Marshall on Saturday, Dec. 21 in SECU Arena to start the winter break.
