Towson Travels to JMU For First Place Showdown

TOWSON, Md. – This Sunday the Towson University women's basketball team reaches the mid-way point of conference action with a road game at James Madison. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. for the contest between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
 
The game will be streamed on JMUSports.com with live stats also on the Dukes' athletic website.
 
Last Time Out
The Tigers are coming off a tough home loss to William & Mary on Sunday, after taking a win last Friday over Elon. It was the second consecutive split weekend for Towson in conference play. Three Tigers scored in double figures for the home team Sunday with 21 points from Nukiya Mayo, 18 from Q. Murray and 10 from Maia Lee, but the Tribe brought a tough fight.
 
The Series: JMU Leads (42-5)
Sunday will be the 48th meeting between the two teams in a series that has been dominated by JMU. At home the Dukes are 20-1 against Towson, the one Tiger win came in January of 2017. Towson lost both games to JMU last season after sweeping the series the year before. On two separate occasions the Dukes have defeated the Tigers by 34, their biggest wins in the series. The last meeting took place on Feb. 11, 2018 in SECU Arena and ended in a 64-55 loss for Towson.
 
Scouting the Tigers (12-7, 6-2 CAA)
In conference statistics the Tigers lead in scoring (69.1 ppg) and blocked shots (6.37 per game), while second in rebounds (43.2 per game). Towson continues to be led by redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter offensively with 20.1 points per game, she leads the CAA. Junior Nukiya Mayo is ninth in the league and second on the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game while leading Towson in rebounds with 7.6 per game. Q. Murray is leading the team in assists with 4.3 per game, she's third in the conference. The Tigers are averaging 71.1 points per game in conference play with a high of 92 points against Hofstra. In conference stats Towson is shooting 40.9 percent from the field and 69.1 percent from the free throw line.
 
Scouting the Dukes (15-4, 7-1 CAA)
James Madison has one of the best defenses in the nation, No. 3 currently, allowing an average of 51.0 points per game from opponents. The Dukes have one conference loss to UNCW, the Seahawks beat both Towson and James Madison in the same weekend. Kamiah Smalls leads the JMU offense with an average of 18.2 points per game, with two teammates averaging at least 10 points as well. Kayla Cooper-Williams is leading the CAA and the Dukes in rebounds with 10.3 per game while Logan Reynolds is leading in assists with 3.8 per game. JMU had wins over Georgetown, George Washington, Dayton and Saint John's in the nonconference schedule.
 
Halfway There
After Sundays game the Tigers will be halfway through the conference slate, with nine regular season games remaining on the schedule. Towson's record of 12-7 overall has surpassed last year's wins, and the 2017-18 squad finished with four wins in conference action which has also been bested with the current 6-2 record.
 
It's a Block Party
The Tigers remain one of the nation's top shot-blocking teams. Towson is averaging 6.4 blocks per game, currently fifth in the nation. Freshman Janeen Camp is in the top-50 at No. 40 with 1.95 blocks per game, she is second in the CAA in blocks. Ryan Holder and Nukiya Mayo join Camp in the league's top-10 for blocked shots averaging 1.3 per game each. Camp has 37 blocks on the season, she is three away for tying for 10th in the single-season top-10 blocked shots in program history.
 
On the Road Again
Sunday begins a three-game road swing for the Tigers. Next weekend Towson will travel to the northern members of the CAA at Hofstra on Friday, Feb. 8 and Northeastern on Sunday, Feb. 10.
 
National Champions of Service
In the fall 2018 semester the Towson University athletic teams completed the most community service hours among all schools in the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Competition. Tiger student-athletes and staff completed 5,583 hours of community service from September to November in the Greater Baltimore Area. Towson's national championship in community service will be celebrated at the February 14th men's basketball game against Delaware.
 
Autism Speaks at SECU Arena
With the Autism Speaks game slated for Sunday, Feb. 17 against the College of Charleston, the women's basketball team will have events leading up to the game, working with the men's basketball team. On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the week's activities begin with a diversity speaker workshop in the Minnegan Room of the field house at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. The following day both the women's and men's teams will host a clinic in SECU Arena with a group from the Hussman Center. The men's Autism Speaks game is Saturday, Feb. 16 against Drexel. The Autism Awareness Week is part of Autism Speaks Coaches Powering Forward. Last season more than 375 NCAA coaches participated in the event by wearing a blue puzzle piece pin during the game. There will be blue T-shirts for all fans at both games.
 
CAA Championship Tickets on Sale 
Ticket books are now on sale for the CAA Women's Basketball Championship hosted by the University of Delaware. The tournament runs from March 13-16 at the Bob Carpenter Center. All-session books start at $35 for general admission seats, with single-session general admission tickets beginning at $8. There are also single-session group tickets on sale, and students who attend schools in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) have free admission with a student ID. Tickets can be purchased through the Towson ticket office with Scott Casten, or by calling the Delaware ticket office at (302) 831-2257.
