Tigers Head to William & Mary and Elon for Final Regular Season Trip

TOWSON, Md. – This weekend the Towson University women's basketball team leaves for its final regular season trip of the year to William & Mary and Elon. The Tigers face the Tribe on Friday night at 7 p.m. and play the Phoenix on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out
Towson is coming off a weekend sweep at home after defeating UNCW and the College of Charleston. It was the Tigers second Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) weekend sweep of the year and the second opponent sweep after defeating Charleston for the second time this year. On Sunday the Tigers wore their blue Autism Awareness jerseys and took an 87-61 win over the Cougars, led by freshman Janeen Camp. The rookie posted a career-high 18 points and four other Towson players scored in double figures to secure the win.

The Series: William & Mary (Tribe leads 20-14)
Friday will be the 35th meeting between the Tigers and the Tribe. At home William & Mary holds the series lead 9-6. The Tribe have won the last two meetings after defeating Towson in SECU Arena 80-69. The 80 points scored were the most William & Mary has posted against the Tigers in series history. In the last meeting Towson saw a slump, shooting 33.3 percent from the field and recording 14 turnovers. The Tribe scored 22 points off Tiger turnovers and saw 21 points from the bench as well.

The Series: Elon (Phoenix lead 7-2)
Towson took its second win over Elon on Jan. 25, a one-point victory in SECU Arena. Sunday will be the 10th meeting between the two teams. The Phoenix hold a 4-0 lead at home and in the last four total meetings have won three games. Against Elon last month the Tigers dropped 25 points in the third quarter and held the road team to 10 to gain back the lead after trailing at half. Nukiya Mayo dropped 15 points in Towson's victory.

Scouting the Tigers (15-9, 9-4 CAA)
Towson enters the weekend with the most wins since the 2011-12 season. The Tigers are averaging 69.9 points per game, leading the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in points per game. Redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter leads the team in scoring with 18.6 points per game while junior Nukiya Mayo is averaging 14.3. Mayo leads the team in rebounds with 7.7 per game while Q. Murray is averaging 4.5 assists per game to lead the team. Towson has won three of its last four games, including a win over Hofstra to complete the 2019 sweep of the Pride. The Tigers are in sole possession of third place in the CAA entering Friday.

Scouting the Tribe (12-11, 5-7 CAA)
William & Mary enters the weekend after defeating Elon on the road 64-59. The Tribe has played the last three games on the road and holds a home record of 6-4 overall. Holding sixth place in the CAA, William & Mary averages 63 points per game led by Bianca Boggs posting 16.8 a night. Three other players are averaging at least 10 points per game in the offensive effort. Boggs also leads the team in rebounds with 5.8 per game and assists with 3.7.

Scouting the Phoenix (8-15, 3-9 CAA)
Elon is coming off a home loss to William & Mary last weekend, and is currently eighth in the conference standings. The Phoenix are 4-7 at home this season and have conference wins over Charleston and Hofstra. Elon is averaging 64.2 points per game, led by Emily Maupin with 12.2. Maupin also leads the team in rebounds with 6.7 per game and Brie Perpignan leads in assists with 2.3 per game.

Leaving Their Mark
This season's basketball team has eclipsed more wins than the last six season with 15. The 2011-12 season recorded 16 wins, if Towson passes the 16 win mark the 2008-09 season was the last with 17 wins. The Tigers have inserted themselves into the program record books with freshman Janeen Camp currently tied for eighth place in single season blocks (44). With five games left in the regular season it is possible for Towson to hit the 20-win mark and for Camp to move up in the top-10. Kionna Jeter (447 points) needs 32 more points to enter the top-10 in single season points, nine more made field goals and 14 more steals (68 steals) to land in those respective categories. Q. Murray (108 assists) is 15 assists away from reaching No. 10 in single season assists.

Blocking Shots and Taking Names
As of Feb. 20 the Towson women's basketball team is second in the nation in blocked shots (157) and blocked shots per game (6.5). The Tigers lead the CAA in blocked shots, led by Camp with 1.8 per game. Towson has four players in the conference top-10 in blocked shots with Camp second, Nukiya Mayo fourth, Ryan Holder sixth and Maia Lee ninth.

Towson's Own Celebrity
In pregame of Sunday's game against Charleston, Nukiya Mayo dunked during a warmup routine and it was captured on video. By Wednesday afternoon the video had reached more than 1,650,000 views on Instagram and Twitter combined. Basketball players like Dwayne Wade, Donovan Mitchell, Lexie Brown Tobias Harris had commented on the video while it was posted onto @ESPNW, retweeted onto SportsCenter and shared by @NCAAWBB on both platforms. Mayo has recorded five double-doubles this season and is the second leading scorer on the team.

Tigers Give Back
Last week the men's and women's basketball teams paired up in support of Autism Awareness and hosted a clinic with the Hussman Center. On Wednesday the teams hosted adults with autism in SECU Arena to work on footwork, shooting and passing, and play some games. The event prefaced the two Autism Games hosted by Towson over the weekend, part of Autism Speaks Coaches Powering Forward. Click here to see a full recap and photos of the events.
