Towson Hits the Road for Hofstra and Northeastern

TOWSON, Md. – A three-game road stretch continues for the Towson University women's basketball team with a trip to New York and Massachusetts.
 
The Tigers travel to Hofstra for a Friday 7 p.m. matchup and continue north afterward to Boston to face Northeastern on Sunday at 2 p.m.
 
Last Time Out
Towson is coming off an overtime loss to James Madison on the road Sunday. After leading at the end of the first quarter, the Tigers battled with the Dukes through the next three periods ending with a 55-55 score at the end of regulation. JMU started the overtime with a 9-0 run that sealed the win.
 
The Hofstra Series: Pride Leads 35-32
Last month Towson hosted Hofstra in the first meeting of this season and came out on top 92-68, the most points the Tigers have ever scored against the Pride. Hofstra holds the series lead of 17-14 for meetings in Hempstead, and won the last game in New York. In 2018 the Tigers fell 69-54 on the road.
 
The Northeastern Series: Tied 19-19
In the first home conference game of the season Towson took a win over then-conference leader Northeastern to even the series 19-19. Before that win on January 11 the Tigers had lost five straight games to the Huskies. Towson took the 88-83 win, the most points ever scored against Northeastern. In Boston the Huskies lead the series 8-7 and have won the last three games in their home gym.
 
Scouting the Tigers (12-8, 6-3 CAA)
Towson enters the weekend fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) after losing the last two games. Redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter leads the offense with 19.7 points per game, also leading the CAA. The Tigers are averaging 68.6 points per game, second in the league, while second in rebounding with 43.4 per game and blocked shots with 6.45 per game. Redshirt junior Q. Murray leads the team in assists with 4.4 per game and junior Nukiya Mayo leads the team in rebounds with 7.5 per game.
 
Scouting the Pride (7-14, 1-8 CAA)
Hofstra currently sits in last place in conference standings, and has lost five of its last six games. The lone CAA win for the Pride came on Jan. 27 against Northeastern, a 78-61 victory. Hofstra is led by Boogie Brozoski with 16.1 points per game and 3.5 assists per game while Sica Cuzic leads the team in rebounds with 7.4 per game. The Pride are averaging 60.9 points per game on a 39.8 shooting percentage. From the line Hofstra shoots 60.9 percent and 31.6 beyond the arc.
 
Scouting the Huskies (14-6, 4-5, CAA)
Before Towson and Northeastern met on Friday, Jan. 11 the Huskies were in first place in the CAA. The Tigers knocked Northeastern off that night and opened a three-game losing skid. The Huskies have defeated Delaware, The College of Charleston, Elon and William & Mary, they will face James Madison on Friday night before Sunday's game. Northeastern is averaging 70 points per game, led by Jess Genco with 18 on average. Gabby Giacone leads the team in rebounds with 6.3 per game while Genco leads in assists with 3.9.
 
Blockin' Shots and Takin' Names
Towson is currently fourth in the nation in blocked shots per game. The Tigers average 6.4 per game and are led by freshman Janeen Camp with 1.9 per game. Camp is 44th nationally among players in blocked shots per game and 47th in total blocked shots with 38 total. The rookie is two blocks away from entering the program's single season top-10 in blocked shots. As a team Towson is sixth nationally in total blocks with 129. Against Northeastern earlier this season the Tigers had 12 blocks, one away from tying the single-game record for blocked shots (13 vs. Glassboro State, 1980). Three members of the team, Camp, Ryan Holder and Nukiya Mayo, are in the CAA's top-six in blocked shots.
 
Stealin' and Dealin'
The CAA leader in steals, Kionna Jeter, is working her way to the single season top-10 steals list. The redshirt sophomore has 59 currently, 23 away from entering the list. Jeter is 23rd in the nation in total steals and 19th in steals per game with 2.95. Ryan Holder is also in the conference leaders at No. 5 with 1.8 per game. On the flip side, Q. Murray is second in the CAA in assists with 4.4 per game, she has 88 on the season and 106th in assists per game.
 
Grabbin' Those Boards
Towson continues to be one of the top rebounding teams in the nation, 18th nationally in rebounds per game with 43.3. The Tigers are eighth in the nation in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 17. Nukiya Mayo is third in the CAA with 7.5 rebounds per game while Maia Lee is sixth with 7.1. As a team Towson is second in the conference behind JMU. Mayo and Lee are in the nation's top-250 in rebounds per game.
 
National Champions of Service
In the fall 2018 semester the Towson University athletic teams completed the most community service hours among all schools in the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Competition. Tiger student-athletes and staff completed 5,583 hours of community service from September to November in the Greater Baltimore Area. Towson's national championship in community service will be celebrated at the February 14th men's basketball game against Delaware.
 
Autism Speaks at SECU Arena
With the Autism Speaks game slated for Sunday, Feb. 17 against the College of Charleston, the women's basketball team will have events leading up to the game, working with the men's basketball team. On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the week's activities begin with a diversity speaker workshop in the Minnegan Room of the field house at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. The following day both the women's and men's teams will host a clinic in SECU Arena with a group from the Hussman Center. The men's Autism Speaks game is Saturday, Feb. 16 against Drexel. The Autism Awareness Week is part of Autism Speaks Coaches Powering Forward. Last season more than 375 NCAA coaches participated in the event by wearing a blue puzzle piece pin during the game. There will be blue T-shirts for all fans at both games.
 
CAA Championship Tickets on Sale 
Ticket books are now on sale for the CAA Women's Basketball Championship hosted by the University of Delaware. The tournament runs from March 13-16 at the Bob Carpenter Center. All-session books start at $35 for general admission seats, with single-session general admission tickets beginning at $8. There are also single-session group tickets on sale, and students who attend schools in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) have free admission with a student ID. Tickets can be purchased through the Towson ticket office with Scott Casten, or by calling the Delaware ticket office at (302) 831-2257.
