TOWSON, Md. – Towson University men's basketball student-athletes
Brian Fobbs and
Dennis Tunstall earned 2019 All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) recognition Friday afternoon. The all-conference teams were selected after voting by the league's head coaches, media relations directors and members of the media.
A 6 foot, 5 inch junior guard, Fobbs was named to the All-CAA Second Team. Meanwhile, Tunstall, a 6-7 redshirt junior forward, earned a spot on the CAA All-Defensive Team.
They lead Towson into the CAA Tournament presented by Jersey Mike's this weekend. Towson opens against James Madison Saturday at 4 p.m. in a first round contest at the North Charleston Coliseum.
In reaching double digits in points 26 times this season, Fobbs was one of the top scorers in the CAA. He was sixth in the conference in scoring (17.5 points per game), 10th in 3-point field goals made per game (2.1), and 12th in rebounding (5.9 rebounds per game) and field goal percentage (45.1).
Fobbs scored 20 or more points in a game 13 times this season. He had double-doubles against Tulane (15 points, 11 rebounds) and UNCW (24 points, 11 rebounds). The 11 rebounds were career bests. Among some of his season highlights was scoring a career best 32 points in a double overtime victory over UMBC, making the winning foul shots with 5.3 seconds remaining to help Towson beat UNCW and sinking a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to force overtime against Delaware.
Fobbs finished the regular season strong by scoring 20 or more points in seven of Towson's last 10 games. He had a stretch in which he scored at least 25 points in four consecutive games from Feb. 9-21. During that scoring surge, Fobbs scored 29 points against James Madison in a victory.
He was named CAA Player of the Week on Dec. 17. Fobbs, who scored in double figures in 19 consecutive games from Nov. 18-Jan. 31, finished with at least six rebounds in a game 19 times this season.
Tunstall finished third in blocked shots (1.0) and ninth in rebounding (7.6) in the conference. In addition, Tunstall averaged 5.6 points per game while leading the Tigers in field goal percentage (63.8). Tunstall blocked a career best five shots against the College of Charleston. He had nine games this season with at least two blocked shots in the same game. Tunstall notched his only double-double this season against Hofstra (season-high 11 points, 10 rebounds).
Tunstall's most memorable performance was his career best 21-rebound effort against Delaware on Feb. 14. It was a SECU Arena rebounding record, passing 2014 CAA Player Of The Year Jerelle Benimon's previous mark of 18 established against Delaware on Feb. 17, 2014. Tunstall became the ninth Tiger in program history to grab at least 20 rebounds in a single game.
The 21 rebounds were tied for the fifth-most in a single game in program history. It was the 16th time in program history a Towson player finished with at least 20 rebounds. Tunstall was the first Tiger since 2012 to have at least 20 rebounds in a game. Tunstall was the second CAA player this season to finish with at least 20 rebounds.
In addition to Delaware, Tunstall had big rebounding games against George Washington (13 rebounds), La Salle (14) and UMBC (15). He had six double-digit rebounding games.
