TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team competes in the UNCG Spartan Classic this weekend. It's the second consecutive year the Tigers are participating in this tournament. In addition to Towson and UNCG, the others teams in this event are St. Peter's and Sacred Heart.
The tournament begins on Friday, March 8 and concludes on Sunday, March 10. Towson will play UNCG and St. Peter's on Saturday, March 8 and UNCG and Sacred Heart on Sunday.
Towson (4-4)
Towson has split its two tournaments, winning two games at the USC-Upstate tournament and a pair three weeks ago at the Coastal Carolina tournament. Towson enters this weekend with consecutive victories over Marshall (3-2) and Presbyterian (9-1). The win over Presbyterian was highlighted by home runs from
Julia Smith-Harrington and
Kendall Arcia as well as a triple by
Jaclyn Mounie.
Sara Johnson and
Ashley Cruise each threw a complete game against Marshall and Presbyterian, respectively.
Towson has four players with at least 13 at-bats hitting above .300:
Julia Smith-Harrington (.462),
Kendall Arcia (.375),
Madison Wilson (.357) and
Lindsey Toneygay (.308).
Nicole Stockinger leads Towson with three home runs. Half of Smith-Harrington's six hits are doubles. The Tigers are hitting .296 as a team. The Tigers have a 4.82 earned run average as a team. Johnson has two of Towson's four wins. She has recorded 26 strikeouts. Cruise has the best earned run average (3.36).
UNCG (9-8)
Members of the Southern Conference (SoCon), the Spartans dropped two games at the Carolina
Classic, with both losses in extra innings. The Spartans hit well during the final day of the Carolina Classic, as eight players had at least two hits. Freshman Delaney Cumbie led the Spartans going 4 for 9 with a home run, double and three RBI's. Junior Monica Pepe and Freshman Gabi Howard each had three hits. Senior Stephanie Bryden was chosen to the all-tournament team. Bryden had her best outing Friday night against Fairfield where she threw a complete game, allowing one hit along with 11 strikeouts. For the season, freshman Kamryn Graves leads the team with a .333 batting average. The Spartans are batting .273 as a team. Bryden leads UNCG with seven wins in twelve appearances.
Saint Peter's (1-6)
Members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Saint Peter's only win this year was over Delaware State. The Peacocks started their trip to Greensboro, North Carolina early with an 8-3 loss to North Carolina A&T Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Alyssa Mido had a team-high two RBI's against North Carolina A&T. Junior Alina Guevara leads the Peacocks with a .353 average. Guevara had two hits Wednesday afternoon and an RBI. The Peacocks are batting .240 as a team. Freshman Sydney Senerchia has a 7.41 earned run average with 10 strikeouts.
Sacred Heart (4-6)
Members of the Northeast Conference (NEC), Sacred Heart has lost three straight following a 3-1 setback to Western Carolina Wednesday. Freshman Alyssa Gonzalez had two of the Pioneers six hits Junior Katelyn Christian's first career home run accounted for the Pioneers' lone run of the contest. The Pioneers have given up at least seven runs in four of their ten contests. Sacred Heart is batting .258 as a team this season. The Pioneers have given up eight hits in two of their last three games.

The Tigers have a pair of mid-week doubleheaders next week beginning with a trip to UMBC on Tuesday, March 12. Towson will play its home opener the following day against George Washington. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
