Several Personal Records Highlight Towson's Day At JHU

BALTIMORE – Taylor Giles (hammer throw), Shamika Burton (long jump), Emily Corso (pole vault), Arianna Waller (400-meter run) and Naja McAdam (long jump) all enjoyed personal best performances to highlight a strong effort for the Towson University women's track and field team at the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invitational on Friday.
 
How It Happened Field
  • Hayley Horvath, the two-time reigning Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Field Athlete of the Week, won the pole vault with a clearance of 3.80 meters (12-05.00).
  • Corso (second, 3.35 meters, 10-11.75) and Samantha Ronald (fifth, 3.35, 10-11.75) also had top five finishes in the pole vault.
  • Michella Obijiaku won the shot put (14.54 meters, 47-08.50) and was second in the hammer throw (51.55m, 169-01).
  • Phontavia Sawyer won the discus (48.40m, 158-09) and finished second in the shot put (14.24m, 46-08.75).
  • Giles won the hammer throw with a toss of 53.80 meters (176-06).
  • Also in the hammer throw, Georgia Coleman was third (49.12m, 161-02) and Julia LaPorta was fifth (43.48m, 142-08).
  • Giles was one of three Tigers to finish among the top five in the discus.
  • Giles was second with a season best effort of 43.25m (141-11).
  • Maria Bravo was fourth (41.21, 135-02) and Sarah LaValley was fifth (39.56, 129-09) in the discus.
  • Burton was second in the long jump with an effort of 5.72m (18-09.25).
  • McAdam won the long jump (1.65m, 5-05.00) and was fifth in the long jump (5.16m, 16-11.25).
  • Also in the high jump, Starr Stover finished second and Ani Boghossian-James was third. They both had clearances of 1.60m (5-03.00).
 
How It Happened Track
  • Burton was second in the 200 meter run (25.52 seconds).
  • It was the first 200 of the outdoor season for Burton.
  • Siani Sellers was sixth in the 200 (26.18).
  • Shelby Francis cruised to victory in the 100-meter hurdles (14.64).
  • Boghossian-James was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.58).
  • Arianna Waller was second in the 100-meter dash (12.27) and sixth in the 400 (58.44).
  • Also running the 100 was Dorcas Nyakiti (fifth, 12.53 seconds) and Jaina McLean (seventh, 12.64).
  • Abby Gauthier and Shelby Bobbie was second and third, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run.
  • Gauthier crossed the finish line in 4:51.34 and Bobbie was behind her in 4:52.70.

  • Paige Keefer will run the 800 and Kylie Anicic will run the 1500 on Saturday night at George Mason.
  • Towson's next meet is next weekend when it competes in the Morgan State Legacy Meet on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20.
  • Some athletes will participate in the Larry Ellis Meet at Princeton on Friday, April 19.
