Three-Mendous: Johnson Earns CAA Weekly Honor

TOWSON, Md. – The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Track Athlete Of The Week award should be named after Towson University freshman sprinter Crystal Johnson.

Johnson captured the CAA Track Athlete Of The Week honor for the third time this outdoor season after another outstanding performance at last week's Morgan State Legacy Meet. Johnson, qualified for the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships in the 100-meter dash in Miramar, Florida from June 21-23, earned CAA Track Athlete of the Week honors on March 19 and April 8.

For the second consecutive meet, Johnson set a school record in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 11.65 seconds. She lowered her impressive mark that was established at the Towson Invitational on April 6 by 1.2 seconds.

This time, Johnson added the bonus thrill of helping the 4 x 100-meter relay team that included senior Arianna Waller, senior Liz Reid and freshman Shamika Burton set a school record. In winning the 4 x 100, the super-sleek quartet finished in 45.56 seconds.

"It is very gratifying to see all of my hard work throughout the year pay off," Johnson said following the Legacy Meet. "Having my work culminate in a school record is humbling and makes me excited for what championship season has in store. Also being a few footsteps behind my competitor around the 50-meter mark, I had to drive through the race to go through the finish line strong."

On the latest CAA performance lists, Johnson has the fastest time in the 100 and third best mark in the 200. The Tigers, who are ranked seventh in the latest Mid-Atlantic Regional Index, have the best time in the 4 x 100 relay in the conference.

Johnson will run as part of the 4 x 100 relay team at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Thursday, April 25. The heats of the 4 x 100 from venerable Franklin Field begin at 1:20 p.m. Following the Penn Relays, the Tigers will compete at the CAA Championships on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 at Elon University.
