TOWSON, Md. -- Towson University senior Phontavia Sawyer was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday afternoon.
 
In finishing fifth overall in the discus at the Penn Relays last Friday, Sawyer established a school record with her effort of 50.85 meters (166-9). She broke her previous best mark of 160-0, which she accomplished last year. Sawyer picked the perfect platform in which to rewrite the record book. Sawyer's effort in the discus is currently 31st in the East Region and second in the CAA.
 
Towson is currently ranked sixth in the United States Track and Field Cross-Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) weekly regional index.
 
Sawyer and the Tigers will compete in the CAA Championships beginning Friday, May 3 at Elon University.  Sawyer is scheduled to participate in the shot put and discus. Both events are on Saturday, May 4.
