TOWSON, Md. – With the first game of 2019 just three weeks away, the Towson University football team completed its first week of practice and held its first weekend scrimmage at camp.
The first week of camp, including the first couple of practices in full pads, concluded this weekend as the newcomers saw their first taste of Tiger football. The weather for most of the week was hot, but no rain during practice, as the team has now gone back to morning practices for the most of the remainder of camp.
"The competition is awesome, everyone wants to come out here and they are working to get better on a regular basis," said Towson head coach
Rob Ambrose. "Our kids see it as an opportunity either personally, as a unit or as a team to get better. It is a pleasure to coach guys like that."
Saturday, Aug. 10
th saw the team hold its first scrimmage with referees, pitting the offense and defense against each other for the first time. Coaches split up on both sides to get their units ready.
"The mental errors that we have are really limited compared to the amount of install we've put in," said Ambrose. "I'm impressed with the mental acuity of our kids across the board, including new kids that have been here two weeks, doing things like they've been here their entire careers. We are bigger and stronger than we were a year ago."
The team has been holding its meetings as well, including having a big surprise during one of them as
Shane Simpson was called to enter in a full white uniform, including new white helmets for the 2019 season. To see the reveal, check out the second episode of "The Hunt Begins," a look at the preseason produced by the Towson Sports Network.
With three weeks to go until the first game at The Citadel, plenty of work still needs to be done.
"As happy as I am with what we are doing and our knowledge of everything, we are not sharp enough, we are not confident enough at all those things yet," said Ambrose. "We know what we are doing, but to put it together and be really fast takes reps."
