CANTON, Ohio – Former Towson University player
Sean Landeta has been selected as a Modern-Era player nominee for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2020, the organization announced on Thursday.
Landeta is one of 122 players, including just 16 special teams players, to be selected as Modern-Era player nominees. Landeta has been chosen as a nominee several times since his retirement.
A 22-year professional in the National Football League (NFL), he played in 284 games and had 1,401 punts, averaging 43.3 yards an attempt for a total of 60,707 punting yards. Landeta was a member of the NFL's 1980s All-Decade Team and 1990's All-Decade Team. He is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants plus was a three-time All-Pro player.
Landeta played for the Tigers from 1979-82, being the first-ever punter to be a member of the
Associated Press College Division All-America Team in 1982, being on the First Team, also being selected as an NCAA Division II Kodak All-American by the America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) that same year. He was elected to the Towson Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005. He currently holds the Towson records with 225 career punts, 9452 punting yards and a career average of 42 yards per punt.
The 122 players will be reduced to 25 semifinalists in November then 15 finalists in January. The Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee will reduce the 15 to 10, then to the five that will go into the Hall of Fame.
