Jeter Named to Preseason Watch List for 2021 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award

HOPEWELL, N.J. – Announced this morning by Her Hoop Stats, redshirt-senior guard Kionna Jeter has been selected to the Preseason Watch List for the 2021 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.

This is a new award, with the first award going in 2020 to South Dakota's Ciara Duffy. Jeter is on the preseason watch list that includes representation from 23 teams and 15 conferences. This is her first accolade of the 2020-21 season which the Towson University women's basketball team is scheduled to begin in a matter of weeks.

The Spartanburg, South Carolina native returns to the court after averaging 18.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game, leading the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in steals all season.

Jeter is the only member of a CAA team on the watch list. A familiar face from Temple is on the list, Mia Davis, who was on the Owls' roster last season when Towson hosted them at SECU Arena.

In the 2019-20 campaign, Jeter scored a season-best 31 points against Iona on Nov. 29. The guard saw her best conference scoring nights against James Madison at home with a 27-point performance and on the road at Delaware with a 28-point evening.

Jeter was named to the All-CAA First Team and CAA All-Defensive team the last two straight years; she reached the 1,000-point mark last season as well and was the fastest player in program history to reach it, in 56 games. She collected three CAA Player of the Week awards in the 2019-20 season.

Last season she recorded two double-doubles and had 28 games with at least 10 points scored. Jeter finished the season, which was cut short in March, ranked 46th in the nation in scoring. She was second in the CAA in points per game and led the league in steals with 96 on the year.

To be eligible for this award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be a "mid-major." In January, 15 players will be named to the midseason watch list and the 10 semifinalists will be announced in February. In March five finalists will be announced with the winner of the award being selected in late March.

This award is named after Becky Hammon who was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999. She was signed by the New York Liberty in 1999 and traded to the San Antonio Stars in 2007 where she spent the remainder of her career in the WNBA.
