Tigers Head to College Park to Face No. 12 Maryland Women

TOWSON, Md.  – Local opponents continue for the Towson University women's basketball team as the Tigers head south on 95 tomorrow for a game at No. 12 Maryland in the Xfinity Center.
 
Towson is coming off a Monday night win at La Salle, entering the matchup with a 2-0 mark.
 
The game is set to tip at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. Live stats will be available on UMTerps.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Towson is coming off a dominating win over La Salle on the road, a 95-66 victory over the Explorers. Led by junior guard Shavonne Smith, the Tigers had five players in double figures and two double-doubles to cap the win. Smith posted a career-high 19 points while Skye Williams came off the bench and dropped 17, Kionna Jeter scored 16, Allie Kubek notched 15 and Aleah Nelson scored 12. Kubek and Nelson both grabbed double-doubles with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Kubek and 12 points and 10 assists for Nelson. The game started with back and forth scoring but the Tigers rolled out to a 12-point advantage in the first quarter. La Salle hustled to close the gap in the second period and was very much not successful as the road team went up by a peak of 25 points. With two minutes left in the half, Towson struggled to score, and the Explorers cut down the deficit to 12 points entering the locker room. The Tigers continued to out-score La Salle in the third, that 12-point difference in the second quarter was the closest La Salle would come to tie the game up.
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Through two games it is clear Towson has weapons all over the floor. Redshirt-senior Kionna Jeter continues to lead the team in scoring averaging 21.5 points per game, with four of her teammates also averaging double digits. Smith averages 16, Nelson averages 12.5, Kubek averages 11 and Williams averages 10. With the scoring there are three players averaging at least six rebounds a night in Jeter, Kubek and LaKaitlin Wright. Towson is averaging 92 points a game, shooting 50 percent from the floor and averaging 47 rebounds a game, working hard on both ends of the floor. Turnovers are something the Tigers will need to work on, currently averaging 19.5 a night. Everyone dressed has seen the floor so far this year and the team is seeing strong production from the bench, which was especially apparent in Philadelphia on Monday night. Towson is averaging 30 points off the bench through two games.
 
THE MARYLAND SERIES (UMD LEADS 16-5)
The last time these teams met was in 2016, the Terrapins came out on top with a 97-63 victory in their home gym. This series dates back to the 1976-77 series, the first game was a 75-50 win for Maryland. In 2009 Towson won 67-55 in the Towson Center, the Terps were ranked No. 25 at the time, that is the last win in the series for the Tigers. Maryland has won the last six meetings dating back to 2010.
 
LAST TIME AGAINST MARYLAND
In December 2016, the Tigers traveled to face No. 4 Maryland in College Park, falling 97-63. Towson had four players score in double figures, led by Sianni Martin who scored 19 points. Raven Bankston scored 14, Brianna Bush and Raine Bankston also contributed 11 points each. Maryland led throughout, rolling to a solid 20-12 advantage at the end of the first period. Towson fell behind in the second quarter as the Terps went on a 24-8 run opening the period; entering the halftime break the home team led 56-29. The Tigers were unable to close the gap in the third but went on to score 12 of the final 19 points in the period. Both teams battled in the fourth as Maryland out-scored Towson 21-19 and took the win.
 
SCOUTING THE TERPS
The No. 12 Maryland women's basketball team enters the game with a 2-1 record following a Thanksgiving week tournament. In the opening week the Terrapins defeated Davidson before falling to then-No. 24 Missouri State. Maryland's last game was a 115-96 victory over then-No.14 Arkansas. Leading the offense is Katie Benzan with 19 points per game; Angel Reese is averaging 17, Diamond Miller is averaging 14.3 and two more Terps are posting at least 10 a game. As a team Maryland is shooting 48 percent from the field and averaging 93.7 points per game. The 2019-20 campaign ended with a 28-4 record, and a Big Ten Championship, for the Terps. Maryland ended the regular season ranked No. 6 and the team's only losses were to a No. 8 South Carolina, No. 13 N.C. State, Northwestern and Iowa. The Terps saw four players leave to graduation and their current leading scorer, Benzan, transferred to Maryland from Harvard.
 
JETER TAKES FIRST WEEKLY HONOR
After a double-double in the season opener, redshirt-senior Kionna Jeter was named the CAA Player of the Week for Nov. 30. Against East Carolina, the guard scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while shooting 42 percent from the floor and making 7-of-8 free throws. Jeter also grabbed a team-high four steals and gave out four assists in the victory.
 
ROAD SWING CONTINUES
This week of three road games continues as Towson heads to face Longwood on Saturday at 3 p.m. which will be on ESPN+. After Saturday the Tigers aren't scheduled to play again until Dec. 22, back at home against Saint Francis.
