Towson Hosts Saint Francis to Wrap Up Non-Conference Play

TOWSON, Md.  – Tomorrow afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team concludes its non-conference schedule of the regular season against Saint Francis (Pa.).
 
The game is set to tip at 2 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.com, with audio from the Towson Sports Network as Ben Rosenbaum and Rashad Christian call the game. Live stats will also be available on TowsonTigers.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Tigers are coming off their third-straight win after defeating Morgan State on Sunday, 95-59 with a career-high 33 points from redshirt-senior Kionna Jeter and a double-double from Aleah Nelson with 14 points and 11 assists. Shavonne Smith was the Tigers' third leading scorer with 10 points. Towson was shooting strong from the get-go and landed a 24-12 lead at the end of the first. In the second quarter, the home team pulled further away, leading by as much as 30 points and taking a 50-23 lead into halftime. Jeter scored 21 of her 33 points in the first half and the Tigers poured it on in the second half, reaching a peak of a 40-point lead with 3:38 to go.
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Towson enters the game with a 5-1 record, on a three-game winning streak, the loss coming to No. 14 Maryland on the road a couple weeks ago. Leading the offense is Kionna Jeter with 25.5 points per game with three other Tigers averaging double figures. Shavonne Smith is scoring 14.3 points a night while Aleah Nelson is averaging 14.2 and Allie Kubek is posting 12.3. Nelson leads the team in assists with seven per game, Kubek continues to lead on the boards with seven rebounds a night. Towson is still holding a team scoring average of 96.3 points per game and holiding its opponents to an average of 78.3 points.
 
THE SAINT FRANCIS SERIES (TOWSON LEADS 5-0)
Tuesday will be the sixth meeting between Towson and Saint Francis (Pa.) in women's hoops, and the first meeting since the 2011-12 season. The Tigers lead the series 5-0. In the 1985 season, Towson scored 90 for the most points ever against SFU, in that same game the Red Flash dropped their series-high 74 points. This will be the first matchup between the teams played in SECU Arena; the last time Saint Francis came to town the arena was not yet built.
 
SCOUTING THE RED FLASH
Saint Francis is coming off two wins over Fairleigh Dickinson; the Red Flash were scheduled to play Mount St. Mary's on Saturday but that game was postponed. SFU holds a 3-4 record entering the game, with the third win over Kent State earlier this month. The Red Flash have faced tough opponents this season including Michigan State and Penn State in the opening week of the season. Leading the team is Karson Swogger with 12.7 points per game while Jada Dapaa leads the team in rebounds with 6.9 per game and Swogger is averaging 4.2 assists per game.
 
LAST TIME AGAINST SAINT FRANCIS

It has been nine years since these teams faced off on the court. In their last meeting in 2011, the Tigers traveled to Loretto, Pennsylvania and left with a 59-53 victory. Led by senior guard Krystal Parnell with 16 points, Towson won its seventh game of the season over the Red Flash. Towson trailed early with an 11-7 deficit in the first six minutes. The Tigers went on a 7-2 run to take the lead 14-13 and continued to score entering the locker room 29-21 at halftime. In the second half the road team held its lead but Saint Francis cut it several times, with a 54-51 score and 52 seconds on the clock. Towson went 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final minute to seal the win. Tanisha McTiller contributed nine points and six rebounds, Nyree Williams had a team-high 12 boards and seven points in the victory.
 
JETER TAKES THE No. 8 SPOT
After Sunday's victory, Kionna Jeter secured the No. 8 spot in the all-time scorer list. She currently has 1,251 points and needs 16 points to take seventh place. Her former teammate Nukiya Mayo sits at No. 5 with 1,372.
 
TIGERS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
Towson holds its No. 3 spot nationally in points per game, behind New Mexico at No. 1 and Maryland at No. 2. The Tigers are currently 16th in field goal percentage (49.0), 12th in offensive rebounds per game (18.2) and 22nd in rebounds per game (47.0). Jeter is eighth in points per game (25.5), fifth in final points (153) and third in field goals made (62). Nelson has a hold of No. 5 in both assists (42) and assists per game (7.0).
 
TOWSON AMONG CAA STATS
Jeter is second in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) scoring, fifth in steals (2.7 average), seventh in field goal percentage (48.4), second in three-point field goals per game (2.5) and her 33 points Sunday are the highest scored by a CAA player this season. Nelson is leading the conference in assists (42) and assists per game (7.0), second in assist/turnover ratio (3.2), eighth in scoring (14.2) and eighth in free throw percentage (81.0). Allie Kubek leads the conference in field goal percentage (62.3), she is ninth in rebounding (7.0), sixth in rebounds (42), and 16th in scoring (12.3). Shavonne Smith is seventh in the league in scoring (14.3), while LaKaitlin Wright is fifth in average blocked shots (1.2) and Bianca Glover is eighth (1.0).
 
CONFERENCE SLATE AHEAD
The Tigers wrap up non-conference play against Saint Francis and are not scheduled to hit the hardwood again until Jan. 3 against James Madison on the road. After Tuesday's game, Towson will next be home on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. against JMU.
