NORFOLK, Va. – The Towson University baseball team scored four straight runs in a comeback attempt at Old Dominion, but came up short in a 9-5 defeat for the season opener in Norfolk.
Down 7-1 after four innings in the freezing cold temperatures, Towson (0-1) scored four runs in the next three frames, capped by a two-run triple by
Brandon Austin, but could not get closer. Old Dominion (1-0) added two more in the eighth for the four-run victory.
Key Stats:
- Towson outhit its opponent with 10, with Old Dominion getting nine.
- Javon Fields went 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot with a walk, a double, a stolen base and two runs. Burke Camper was 3-for-4 with a steal, a run and an RBI while Noah Cabrera finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Austin brought in two runs in a 1-for-5 day, including his triple.
- On the mound, Josh Seils (0-1) had only one run in the first three innings but finished with five runs in 3.1 innings, striking out two in the defeat. Austin Weber had three runs, two earned, in four relief innings, striking out three, with Cam Clark finishing on Towson's end with two-thirds of an inning, having an unearned run and a strikeout.
- For ODU, Tommy Bell reached base five times, going 2-for-2 with three walks, three runs and an RBI. Starter Hunter Gregory went 4.1 innings with two runs and six strikeouts. The win went to reliever Aaron Holiday (1-0), going 1.2 frames of relief with a run and three strikeouts while Noah Dean picked up the save, going the final two innings scoreless with four batters struck out.
How it Happened:
- Towson get a run in its opening inning, beginning with a leadoff double to right from Javon Fields, then an advance to third on a ground out by Noah Cabrera. Burke Camper lined a single to left-center, bringing in Fields for a 1-0 Towson lead.
- Josh Seils worked his way out of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first with a ground out and two fly outs. In the next inning, a two-out single by Austin LaFollette scored a run for ODU, tying the game at 1-1.
- Towson threatened in the top of the third with singles from Fields and Camper, then each stole bases to go into scoring position, but were stranded.
- ODU pieced together three one-out hits to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Later, RBI hits by Matt Coutney and Tommy Bell assisted ODU in building a six-run inning. The Monarchs led 7-1 after four.
- The Tigers got a run back in the fifth as Nick Brown drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit to five. Next inning, Cabrera sent a double down the left field line to score Dirk Masters to make it 7-3 ODU in the top of the sixth.
- The rally kept going in the top of the seventh as Camper and Brown drew walks. Two batters later, Brandon Austin lined a ball to the right field corner for a triple, bringing home two runs and getting Towson within two at 7-5.
- Austin Weber continued to throw scoreless in relief, going through the fifth, sixth and seventh without any runs allowed. ODU got two runs back in the eighth, just one earned, to lead 9-5, the eventual final score.
Inside the Numbers:
- During pregame, Old Dominion gave a moment of silence for Laura Tyner.
- Burke Camper and Reid Zitzelberg hit safely in their first at-bats as Tigers. Brandon Austin also earned a hit in his first game with Towson.

Towson comes back to the Bud Metheny Complex tomorrow at 2 p.m. for game two against Old Dominion.
