Softball Defeats Winthrop in Final Game of Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Towson University softball team defeated Winthrop 11-7 in the last game of the tournament inside Terry Field Sunday afternoon.

How it happened
  • A nice split by Madison Wilson to tag the bag for the second out helped Cruise and the Tigers get out the first inning.
  • After having runners on the corners, Jessica Swistock had the two run triple to give the Tigers and early 2-0 lead.
  • A single to center field by Gracyin Houmis added one more run to the board for the Tigers. (3-0)
  • The Eagles scored on a double to left field bringing them within one in the bottom of the second. (3-2 Tigers)
  • Winthrop tied the game in the bottom of the third.
  • In the top of the fourth, Nicole Kidwiler had a two run triple adding two more runs on the board for Towson. Up next, was a double by Jaclyn Mounie which added one more run and the Tigers led 6-3.
  • Tori Walker hit a two run home run for Winthrop in the bottom of the fourth. (Towson 6-5).
  • Samantha Carson hit a home run in the top of the fifth to help the Tigers lead 7-5. Swistock added a RBI and the Tigers led 7-5.
  • Taylor Charlton hit a two run homer in the bottom of the fifth to bring the Eagles within one.
  • A single to third base by Lauren Ringhiser added one more run for the Tigers in the top sixth, Towson led 9-7.
  • Towson sealed the deal in the top seventh after a two run hit by Cason gave Towson the 11-7 final.
Inside the Numbers
  • Towson went 3-2 during the weekend.
  • Ashley Cruise pitched 3 innings for the Tigers with two strikeouts.
  • Mady Wood also saw time in the circle for Tigers having two strikeouts. Sara Johnson also pitched 3 innings for the Tigers and had two strikeouts.
  • Towson finished the game with 11 RBI's with Carson and Swistock having three apiece.
  • Carson had three home runs during the tournament.
Up Next
Towson is back on the road for its third tournament in three weeks. The Tigers will participate in the Pirate Invitational, hosted by East Carolina in Greenville, North Carolina. The first game is scheduled to begin Friday, Feb. 21 at 12:30 inside the ECU Softball Stadium.
