MIAMI – The Towson University baseball team engaged in an exciting pitcher's duel with the seventh-ranked team in the country and put the potential tying run on second in the ninth, but fell 2-1 to Miami in the Friday opener at Mark Light Field.
Both sides went scoreless in the first four innings with Towson (2-5) getting a couple of runners in scoring position. Miami (6-3) pieced together three straight hits in the bottom of the fifth for two runs.
With its bullpen holding the rest of the way, Towson got the potential tying run to second in the ninth after a
Burke Camper RBI double, but a ground out ended the inning with Miami winning by one.
Key Stats:
- The Towson pitching staff held No. 7 Miami to five hits in the game. Josh Seils (0-3) went 6.1 innings with two runs and four strikeouts in his start. Austin Weber and Jake Pecilunas combined for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to keep Towson in striking distance.
- In the 3-spot of the lineup, Javon Fields went 2-for-4, stealing two bases. Burke Camper's RBI double give him his first collegiate RBI, going 1-for-4 in the game.
- Miami's Jordan Lala finished 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot, including the eventual game-winning RBI single in the fifth. Starter Brian Van Belle (2-0) picked up the win, throwing seven scoreless and striking out 14, with reliever Daniel Federman getting the one-out save, his second of the season.
How it Happened:
- Top of the first, Colin Conroy worked a full count then ripped a single into straight-away center to get the leadoff man on, but Miami got out of the inning without a run across. Towson threatened again in the next inning, getting Noah Cabrera on with a dropped third strike, then Brandon Austin drawing a full count walk, but a strikeout ended the inning without a run across.
- On the hill, Josh Seils held strong in the first four innings, allowing just two hits and no runs in that time. In the fifth, Seils induced a ground out to lead off, but Miami put together three straight hits, capped by a Luis Tuero RBI double to left and a Jordan Lala RBI single up the middle, for a 2-0 Hurricanes lead.
- Towson tried to respond next inning, with Javon Fields earning a single up the middle and stealing second with two outs, but a ground out ended the inning.
- Seils recovered and retired the sixth inning order 1-2-3. He, Austin Weber and Jake Pecilunas combined to hold off the Hurricane batters in the seventh and eighth frames.
- Towson attempted a final push in the ninth with Brad Powers getting hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base. Burke Camper came up next and belted a ball off the left-center wall, narrowly short of a home run, bringing in Powers and putting the tying run in scoring position. The rally came up short as a ground out ended the inning and the game.
Inside the Numbers:
- Josh Seils has his longest start of the year and first time going over 100 pitches this season, throwing 102.
- Towson held Miami's Adrian Del Castillo, who was hitting .560 entering the day, to 0-for-4 on the night.
