Wonders, Fobbs Named Student-Athletes of the Year in Golden Paws Awards

TOWSON, Md. -- Shifting to an all-digital format for the annual Golden Paws Awards Banquet at Towson University, two seniors were selected as Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

The annual awards were announced Thursday night on the Towson Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) social media channels. Senior women's volleyball All-America Honorable Mention Marrisa Wonders was tabbed as the Female Athlete of the Year while senior men's basketball standout Brian Fobbs was the Male Athlete of the Year.

Below are the descriptions of each award and bullet points on the recipient.

Athlete of the Year: This award acknowledges the season-changing impact of one student-athlete. 
Marrisa Wonders (Volleyball)
  • 2019 CAA Player of the Year and Setter of the Year 
  • 2019 CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player 
  • 2019 First Team All-CAA 
  • AVCA Honorable Mention All-American (first in program history)
  • VolleyballMag.com Fourth Team All-American 
  • Top 10 in NCAA DI in assists per set 
  • Team USA Tryout Invitation 

Brian Fobbs (Men's Basketball)
  • 2020 Second Team All-CAA 
  • Ninth in CAA in Scoring 
  • Only the 22nd student-athlete in school history to score 1,000 points 
  • Twice named CAA Player of the Week 
  • Scored in double figures in 28 of 32 games 

Senior Career Achievement Award: This award recognizes student-athletes for outstanding achievements throughout their four years at Towson. 
Lauren Coleman (Track & Field)
  • Second ever Towson student-athlete to qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships (2020) 
  • Most Outstanding Field Athlete at 2018 CAA Outdoor and 2018 ECAC Outdoor Championships 
  • Qualified for 2018 NCAA Regionals 
  • 2017 & 2018 CAA Champion in Shot Put 
  • 2018 ECAC Indoor & Outdoor Champion in Shot Put 
  • School record holder in Indoor Shot Put 

Aidan O'Neill (Football)
  • Towson's all-time leader in made field goals and field goal percentage for a season and a career 
  • CAA all-time leader in made in career, tied for ninth in FCS history 
  • 2019 Second Team All CAA 
  • 2018 First Team All CAA 
  • 2016 Third Team All CAA 
  • 2018 Second and Third Team All-America by several publications 

Rookie of the Year: This award is given to a freshman that had an outstanding first season and positively impacted their team. Can be a redshirt or true freshman. 
Lydia Wiers (Volleyball)
  • CAA Rookie of the Year 
  • First team All-CAA 
  • AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year 
  • VolleyballMag.com Freshmen All-America Honorable Mention 
  • Five-time CAA Rookie of the Week 
  • Finished 11th in the NCAA DI in hitting percentage
Jason Gibson (Men's Basketball)
  • CAA All-Rookie Team
  • CAA Rookie of the Week January 27
  • Second in CAA in Free Throw Percentage in CAA games
  • Started the final 19 games of the season
Best Moment: This award recognizes a student-athlete or team for the best moment/play of the year.
Volleyball: Wins first NCAA tournament match in school history
Men's Basketball: Gibson no look pass to Fobbs – ESPN Sportscenter Top 10

Comeback Award: This award recognizes student-athletes that despite injury, have demonstrated a commitment to their rehabilitation program to return to competition while showing positivity and perseverance within the Towson Athletics Department

Additionally, Towson SAAC added social media awards for the 2019-20 academic year. Gymnast Olivia Lubarsky was voted as the Most Inspirational, the field hockey program won Biggest Supporters, the gymnastics team was voted Ready to Roar while the women's basketball team won Most Clout. The baseball team was selected as the Biggest Hype Team.
