TOWSON, Md. – A season abruptly ended did not stop senior
Lindsey Toneygay from continuing to play the sport she loves.
Little did Toneygay or any of her Towson University teammates realize that after winning three of four games of the DeMarini Tiger Clash, it would be their last home tournament of the season and ultimately the final contests of 2020. Within the next couple days news spread that the spring seasons were being canceled due to the COVID-19.
So what next?
For the senior catcher from Sylvester, Georgia she knew her answer was a couple catches away. After announcing that she would continue her senior season with the Tigers, Toneygay was determined to keep playing.
Toneygay got the opportunity to play with the Florida Gulf Coast League for six weeks down in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. The first-year league did not disappoint for Toneygay as she had the chance to play with so many ladies from various conferences.
The league consisted of six teams and ladies from different conferences such as the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Big 12, Atlantic Sun (A-Sun), Atlantic Coast (ACC), Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and Conference USA (C-USA). They played against these teams for six weeks which the last week consisted of playoffs. They usually played at night and had Wednesdays and Sundays off.
"Florida Gulf Coast League was by far one of the most memorable softball experiences I've ever done," Toneygay said. "My team was called the Bradenton Slice and we were known as the team who had the most fun in the league by far."
"We had silly walk up songs for everyone and even had a team mascot which was a Barbie doll. Overall our team had a great time on and off the field."
"I met so many great friends and learned more about the game from playing with my teammates. It was interesting to hear stories from girls who play at different conferences and how small the world of softball actually is. I actually played with a girl here who played against me in middle

school, which is crazy!"
Toneygay said it was just great to still be able to play after COVID-19 cancelled her regular season. "We were all grateful to play a season of softball and overall we all made some awesome memories playing the game we love and longed to play."
"To have this past season to be stripped from us, I kind of felt weird and empty, but I'm glad this league could be able to fill the void of not having a season. I'm thankful for the memories I've made and for the competitive, fun softball I played."
Toneygay and the Bradenton Slice went 13-8 during the summer season.
