TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's track and field team opens its 2020-21 season at the Keydet Invitational, hosted by VMI on Saturday, Jan. 16. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. inside the Corps Physical Training Facility.
This is the first of six meets for the Tigers and all of them are being held in Virginia.
Other teams participating include George Mason, VCU, Shenandoah, James Madison, Lynchburg, UNC Charlotte, Eastern Mennonite, Lincoln Memorial and UNC Pembroke.
About the Meet
The Tigers will open the meet with
Ani Boghossian-James,
Olivia Miller and
Liana Wilkinson competing in the Pentathlon (high jump, long jump, shot put, triple jump and weight throw). The afternoon portion of the meet will include the running events starting with the 60m dash preliminaries. Followed by the mile, 60m hurdles, 400m, 800m, 200m, 3000 and the 4x4 relay. The Tigers have at least three student athletes competing in each event.
Newcomers
The Tigers added 19 freshmen to the roster during the off season.
Last Season
The Tigers won the East College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships for the first time in school history. History was made numerous times for the field throwers including
Lauren Coleman and
Michella Obijiaku landing in the top-25 in the national rankings.
Adia Cavalier set a new school record in the triple jump on Jan. 14 with a 12.29m effort.
On Jan. 19,
Hayley Horvath set a new record at the Towson Invitational in the pole vault with a 4.02m (13'2.25") mark.
Crystal Johnson also set the record in the 60m dash (7.40). Helensarah Penda finished her indoor career as the number two 60m hurdler (8.46) in program history. Coleman broke the school record in shot in New Mexico at 16.75m. Obijiaku broke the school record in weight at ECAC's at 20.66m.
Tigers in the Community
The Towson University athletics department deems community service as one of its highest priorities to give back to the Greater Baltimore area.
Towson was on track to have its 8th consecutive year of over 10,000 hours of community service in 2019-20 before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down all activity. Towson finished with 7,527 hours last year, good for third in the NCAA Teamworks Helper Helper competition.
Towson ranked #1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition. Towson also won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
